glamorous heritage villa

Opawa

An original 1907 villa has been transformed to a very glamorous yet versatile and welcoming family home.

The owners wanted to give it a very rich yet classic neutral colour palette without it being boring, yet in keeping with the heritage of the original homestead.

The home size was increased in 2006 with a sympathetic extension to include the new kitchen/dining/living space. Original cornices were reproduced to ensure a seamless transition from old to new. The original part of the home was lathe and plaster which was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes. With the start of the repair schedule the owners moved out for six months, while the walls were stripped and relined with plywood underneath a plasterboard finish. The ply underneath ensured strength and the opportunity for versatile art and decorative curtain rod fixing points. Skirtings and architraves were carefully recreated in pine and painted in situ. The 3.3m ceiling height throughout adds drama and a feeling of spaciousness.

The palette reflects the owners’ love of European antiquities and art with a bold yet neutral palette choice. They wanted a very glamorous space that wasn’t boring yet neutral enough they don’t need to change it often as the detailing means many hours of painting work. The homeowners have raised three sons here and the home’s interior colours is a reflection of workable family spaces that aren’t too precious to be enjoyed with a busy family life. A ‘country home in the city’ was part of the brief.

The family enjoys entertaining year round and the colours ensure an inviting and warm home during winter months, with a cheery feel for summer.

The kitchen is finished in Resene Quarter Craigieburn on walls with trims in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and the ceiling in Resene Café Royale. A statement ceiling in Resene Pohutukawa in the hallway provides a warm welcome to guests.

Paints selected, such as Resene Lustacryl and Resene Room Velvet are durable and resistant to hand marks and easily wiped down. The large kitchen island top was handmade using recycled heart rimu floorboards – however after the years of service since 2006 the owners’ were ready to spruce it up and tone down the golden yellow hues of the natural rimu. It was finely sanded using a Festool Rotec sander until all traces of the original lacquer were gone then coated with Resene Ebony in layers to achieve a deeper finish and tone down the yellow timber without being too dark.

This project won a Resene Total Colour Residential Interior Colour Maestro Award. The judges said "flamboyantly dressed, eyes are immediately drawn to the magnificent ceilings of colour, which reach down from the ceiling into the room. Warm, deep and glamorous, using the ceiling for the main colour features allows the colour to make a grand entrance in each space with an uncluttered space to really let the colour sing. Beautiful."
