heritage charmed

Victorian architecture

There is something magical about Victorian architecture, a mix of sturdy construction with intricate detail.

Bringing back the charm of yesteryear in a modern way was the goal of this project. The harsh Ballarat climate, freezing winters and scorching summers, plays havoc on paint, with flaky paint, rotting weatherboards, drab cream and mix of light and dark greens making the house seem old, tired and dated.

The aim was to make the home feel refreshed and sparkling, yet keep its heritage charm. Neutral Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint in Resene Surrender was chosen for the main body of the house and the garage door, using Resene Summit Roof. Wood detailing was picked out in Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Alabaster to showcase the window wood detailing and iron lacework on the veranda. These two colours in combination are fresh and modern and in keeping with the heritage look without being ostentatious. Resene Disco was chosen for the front door to spark intrigue from passers-by, bring a smile to visitors as they knock and to light up their daughter’s eyes. This was painted in Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel to really make the colour pop.

Choosing colours with a partner who is colour blind, yet extremely opinionated, was a task in itself. After many blue tacked colour patches they finally agreed on a winning combination. Surprisingly there was no complaint about wanting to paint the front door in electric pink. Maybe it was the colour blindness working in their favour.

The main body of the house was painted by BCR Painting, however our garages and fences, all 270 pickets, were painstakingly painted by the owners while the children napped using Resene Alabaster and posts in Resene Surrender. Originally it was thought that the fence just needed a refresh but it was soon discovered that the framework was rotten and it quickly became a total rebuild.
