Melbourne Kicks

Melbourne

Footlocker approached George Rose to create a bespoke mural for their largest store in the Southern Hemisphere.

The mandatory requirement was to use the brand colours – red and black. The mural features abstract brushstrokes evoking a feeling of impulsive and ecstatic movement. Interwoven through this mark making, were shapes of flatlays of patterns used to create sneakers – the hero product of the brand.

The concept is based on the fast paced, alleyway culture of Melbourne. Bringing street art into the store was a way of the retail giant to pay homage to a city’s love affair. This is the largest Footlocker in the Southern Hemisphere, and the largest mural inside an Australian Footlocker store.

A challenge was that the project required brand colours, which pushed the focus onto the mark making. George used strong, bold and impactful lines to provide energy and movement to her mural, using Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint in Resene Shuttle Grey, Resene Black and a Resene match to the brand colour of Pantone 186C.

This project is part of a body of work that won the Resene Total Colour Visual Art Award. The judges said "an incredible body of work, bold interpretations and colour palettes bring streetscapes and public spaces to life in a true celebration of colour and artistry. The works are so over scaled to suit each environment. With an underlying style, the art is reinvented with each brief so that each work truly shines on its own. Harnessing an enviable eye for colour, the colour palettes and proportions are beautifully and brilliantly intertwined."
