Healing Vision

Bruce

The signature trait to George’s work is her colour palette. In this case, colour became a vital ingredient along with the subject matter in order to help relax and eventually heal patients.

The rehabilitation centre at the University of Canberra enables students a hands on learning environment for the continued care of those undergoing or having just finished chemo. The UC Health Clinics facility is located within the Canberra Specialist Medical Centre at UC.

The facility provides allied health student-led services for cancer patients during and post-cancer treatment. They have been engaging with their patients in this new space to seek feedback and they suggested some wall treatments might inspire their journey or at the minimum, brighten up the spaces where the services are provided.

Rather than painting the walls a bright colour or use wallpaper, the University of Canberra thought it would be worth finding an artist that might be able to do something vibrant and interesting in this space. Enter George Rose – an old University of Canberra girl herself.

The project encompassed two areas – the reception and the rehabilitation gym. George initially chose to depict indigenous botanicals (Bush Medicine) which were used for health and healing within the work. These included kangaroo apple (Solarium laciniatum and Solarium aviculture), snake vine (Tinospora smilacina), billy goat plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana), Blackwood acacia melanoxylon, tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), eucalyptus and bubble lily. Colour palettes chosen were bright but calming – green and earthy tones at the entrance and bright but cooling tones in the gym.

George’s work has received positive feedback from patients and was a rewarding experience for the artist. The idea of creating work to uplift someone’s day is part of the purpose she aspires with each project.

This project is part of a body of work that won the Resene Total Colour Visual Art Award. The judges said "an incredible body of work, bold interpretations and colour palettes bring streetscapes and public spaces to life in a true celebration of colour and artistry. The works are so over scaled to suit each environment. With an underlying style, the art is reinvented with each brief so that each work truly shines on its own. Harnessing an enviable eye for colour, the colour palettes and proportions are beautifully and brilliantly intertwined."
