Melbourne
This wall concept marries her love of body language with literal language whereby hidden words are ticked secretly within the artwork.
Aurora was pinpointed by curator Eddie Zammit to paint the main entrance wall at ELLA. ELLA is a precinct of the wide Melbourne Central property. The wall is situated at the top of the escalators where thousands of Melbourne Central train passengers come and go everyday.
ELLA is a new offering and so Aurora was the perfect choice and this mural was her first major piece at such a large-scale. This wall concept marries her love of body language with literal language whereby hidden words are ticked secretly within the artwork. The notion of secrecy is a reference to all the secret destinations Melbourne offers and speaks volumes to Melbournian’s – if you know, you know.
According to Aurora, “I am particularly interested in human behaviour. Hands play a big part in my practice because they convey mood. People are very accustomed to communicating verbally, but to me the real honesty has always been in the hands.” For Aurora, hands show confidence, happiness, nerves and passion.
The colours are reflective of the environment – loud, different and interesting. They complement the surrounding architecture. Words hidden within the artwork include coffee, ELLA, hustle, Melbourne and move – all representative of the offerings and the place.
The colour palette of Resene Lumbersider low sheen tinted to Resene Cupid and Resene Havoc references the ELLA environment – something a little feminine and different and unexpected.
As this was Aurora’s first large-scale wall, she had to acquire a scissor lift licence in order to keep within safety measures required in a public space.
