The inspiration for the colours was the close association and connection with the sea and Picton’s maritime history.

This has been a huge community project from the very start.

These boat shed were originally in the Picton Marina. Due to redevelopments the sheds were surplus to requirement. The Picton Seaport Trust was offered by Port Marlborough a set of six sheds if they removed them from the marina. An offer the Trust keenly accepted. These sheds were built in the early 1960s with wooden wall frames and tin on the exterior, solid wooden double doors and sitting on cement piles. These sheds were ideal for the Trust's vision for the Picton PowerHouse Maritime Heritage Reserve, a project the Seaport Trust has been working toward for over twenty years.

Removing them from the marina took a few weekends, all done by volunteer labour. Getting all the right consents and permits took a lot longer. The sheds were dismantled into moveable sized pieces and relocated to the PowerHouse Reserve, 4km down the road. As each piece was brought to the site it was reconstructed onto a cement footing. The condition of the wooden doors after all those years sitting in the marina was poor. Layers of paint were in bad condition, flaking off and the doors were very warped.

The doors were stripped right back, straightened, sanded, primed, filled, sanded, primed again with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and two topcoats of Resene Hi-Glo waterborne gloss in a palette of Resene Harp, Resene Anakiwa, Resene Edgewater, Resene Perano, Resene Perfume and Resene Corn Field. The inspiration for the colours was the close association and connection with the sea and Picton’s maritime history.

The exterior walls are painted with Resene Summit Roof satin waterborne roof paint. The roof painting will be completed once the boat sheds are fully refurbished. The next step in the process is to add a rolled veranda with wooden posts along the front with a wooden deck.
