Southshore home

Christchurch

Set in a secluded location on Southshore Spit, this home’s living area overlooks the sand dunes, a view the client has been enjoying for over 50 years.

The site is very exposed, and part of the brief was to create a sheltered outdoor living area on the first floor so the client could enjoy the view while spending time outdoors.

Exterior of house and new cladding

Construction work included replacing the existing weatherboard cladding with new, installing new double-glazed timber windows and doors to most of the house, and the creation of a large steel-framed deck that provides shade for the patio beneath.

To avoid detracting from the simple but elegant design of the original mid-century house the deck addition has been designed to be visually detached. This was achieved by cladding the steel frames with bandsawn cedar facings that will be left to weather, in contrast to the crisp paint finish on the house. Glass balustrades are used to space the timber from the weatherboard walls. As a gesture to the original design the top edge of the solid timber screen, viewed on approaching the house, is sloped to echo the monopitch roof that remains a feature of the original house.

The client is a potter, and the interior of her home is filled with bold artwork set off against neutral walls in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Rice Cake and Resene Aquaclear clear finished timber ceilings and joinery. This inspired the exterior colour scheme with an equally-rich combination of colours and materials outside so the outdoor living area is a natural extension of the internal space.

Resene Sonyx 101 tinted to Resene Sandspit Brown and Resene Enamacryl gloss tinted to Resene Quarter Sandspit Brown were used on the house to provide a bright and fresh look that is perfect for this coastal setting, with just enough warmth to balance the cedar used on the deck addition.

After trialling several colours for the entry door and window seat Resene Enamacryl gloss in Resene Wanaka was chosen, a bold deep blue that disrupts what would otherwise be quite a formal colour scheme, so it better suits this relaxed beach setting. It also perfectly complements the weatherboard and timber colours and the brass bell hanging by the entry door.

Resene Uracryl 402 in Resene Ironsand was chosen as a recessive colour for the structural steelwork viewed between the posts, and works well alongside the silicon bronze fastenings which have oxidised to a similar rich deep brown colour. This colour was repeated in gloss Resene Hi-Glo on the edges of the roof.

The owner had an old weathered brass bell hanging at the front door of the original house. It was taken down and polished up to a bright finish. It now looks striking reinstalled beside the deep blue Resene Wanaka entry door.
