Bledisloe Park Sports Centre

Pukekohe

Functionality and budget were the main considerations during the design phase with the aim to develop a building that would be elegant and robust and at the same time a piece of timeless architecture that would be appreciated for many years to come.

The Bledisloe Park Society was in desperate need for a new building to provide a modern venue for both spectators and players. Functionality and budget were the main considerations during the design phase with the aim to develop a building that would be elegant and robust and at the same time a piece of timeless architecture that would be appreciated for many years to come.

This design intent has also been transferred to the colour selections. The building needed to stand out from the heavy density vegetation in the park but the colour combination and the colour temperature could not affect its context. A dark charcoal colour in Resene Lumbersider was chosen to set the robustness base for the building, with the much brighter Resene Whizz Bang chosen for the upper level to emphasise the building from afar and Resene White for the roof for a lean and airy feeling while also complementing the openness and freshness of the park. These three very contrasting colours are an elegant and effective colour treatment.

With the building situated in the middle of a park, protection from graffiti was of prime concern. This influenced the choice of the dark base colour to complement the other chosen colours as well as being rich enough to easily cover spray paint colours. Options were tested and Resene Double Gravel was found to be the optimum choice.
