Sydney
This project was the second of two new houses to be built alongside each other at Palm Beach, Sydney, and is almost wedged between a newly completed house to the right (west) side and a painted timber cottage style home to the left (east).
While the site is reasonably deep, with considerable landscaping to the rear and side, the house very much presents ‘front on’ to the streetscape.
The house was similar in design form to its newly completely neighbour. As such, the two would need to share a general language, but it was important that each house very much had its own character.
The brief was to create a very comfortable, almost casual, feel, with natural finishes and textures to reference the context of the beach and its surrounding landscape.
For this house, a much more weathered and textured palette was chosen, designed to wear in over time. The external treatment features an extensive use of cedar and recycled hardwood in various formats.
The warmth of the timber is set against the dark Resene X-200 weathertight membrane in Resene Half Ironsand paint colour of the rendered walls and the mottled grey and rust tones of Wamberal stone cladding.
This approach continues internally with the use of cross cut silver travertine, tumbled olive limestone and natural oak to the floors.
The use of cedar continues through to the internal spaces, defining spaces through ceiling lining and wall screening. The cedar also references the rich sand colour of Palm Beach after the rain.
The colour scheme was worked back from the colours and features of natural cedar. The internal surfaces were kept relatively light, to contrast the strong external palette, and the expressed cedar detailing, using Resene Zylone Sheen in Resene Quarter Akaroa on walls, Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss on most trims and joinery and Resene Ceiling Flat on ceilings, both in Resene Bianca.
Extending the palette further, in the kitchen, the joinery is painted in Resene Stonehenge and the kitchen mirror frame in Resene Pitch Black. Bathroom vanities are finished in Resene Half Akaroa, and wardrobe joinery in Resene Double Akaroa.
The overall palette references the various colours over the weathering process of the cedar – from its rich rust tones through the mid to pale straw colouring and finally through to the silvery greys.
