Ashburton
Fresh, welcoming, healthy were some of key design drivers for the concept.
Eastfield Health is one of Ashburton's oldest primary health care providers, who have until recently been working from a converted house on the fringes of Ashburton's CBD. Along with a rebrand and a fresh approach to healthcare, they chose to make the move to a purpose built facility in the centre of Ashburton, one of the first buildings in the new Eastfield Development.
As their patients come from all sectors of society, the centre had to be welcoming and comfortable for a wide range of people. Focusing on comfortable, welcoming spaces that are both calming, but vibrant was important – patients should look forward to visiting and feel optimistic and cheerful while waiting to see a doctor or nurse. Meanwhile, busy staff need to be in an uplifting and energetic environment so they can be at their best through the day.
Natural colours and textures, access to daylight, variety in tones, soft curves and touches of timber are all elements that were used to promote feelings of comfort, energy, health and optimism that are so important in creating a positive environment.
Alongside the look and feel of the space it was also important to specify healthy materials. PVC free flooring, extremely cleanable and sterile surfaces and low and no added VOC paint finishes, with Resene Zylone Sheen Zero for most walls and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in wet areas.
Fresh, welcoming, healthy were some of key design drivers for the concept. With this in mind the materials palette brings a connection to nature into the interior, for both patients and staff. This is achieved by bringing in elements of timber (Ash) and a vibrant, energetic flooring pattern. From there a range of paint colours have been chosen to complement these elements and provide little areas of joy and surprise throughout the centre.
At the same time as developing the interior concept, Plato Creative had been engaged to design a new brand for the practise. They worked with the initial ideas and created a palette of brand colours, that were translated into standard Resene colours and some custom made Resene colours.
Custom made Resene Eastfield Leaf Green welcomes in all clients teamed with custom made Resene Avenues White. Door leaves feature a range of greens in Resene Eastfield Moss Green, Resene Eastfield Leaf Green, Resene Zuccini, Resene Gordons Green and the white of Resene Avenues White. Resene Avenues White continues onto skirting with Resene Foundry used on selected skirting.
The biggest challenge was never having designed a medical centre fit-out before, and the client had never built from scratch before. It was critical that everyone was aware of this going into the project – communication was key. Having a great relationship with suppliers and builders to make sure appropriate materials were specified was also critical to the success of the project.
