Geometric Artwork

Australia

Beth Radford is an artist working in hard-edge abstraction who makes large-scale pieces for private residences and corporate offices.

Beth uses mathematics to create interesting geometric patterns that are coloured through the use of symmetry and various kinds of transformations and layering to make dynamic configurations that are highly structured and systematic with a sense of depth. This piece has three layers on a white background. Towards the centre all the layers come together to create a central focal point.

Monochromatic works such as this one use high contrast to emphasise movement in the design. It is a bold work intended for a bold, modern interior. Its energetic design implies progress and innovation.

This pattern is most optically effective in black and white and shades of grey. This high contrast neutral palette makes the painting visually confounding and draws the eye across the design. Using Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss for the black and white gives the work a beautiful sheen. Using silver shades of Resene FX Metallic Silver Aluminium and Resene Blast Grey 3 instead of grey adds an extra dimension to the work and the added reflection heightens the kinetic effect. The silver metallic effect also causes the work to appear different from different vantage points and at different times of day. If there are strong colours in the room it reflects these to create a tonal relationship with the surrounds.

Intricate paintings like this are always time-consuming. Each layer is meticulously measured out and each segment masked before the paint is applied.

Beth has sold many paintings finished in Resene paints to collectors all over the world. It is easy to transport artwork painted with Resene paints because they can be taken off the stretcher frame and rolled without any cracking or damage occurring.
