OCKHEE – Korean Eatery

Auckland

The selection of material and finishes was restrained to a rich and textural palette of walnut, stone and lime plaster render.

Ockhee is a newly opened Korean eatery situated in the upbeat community of Ponsonby. Using handpicked, locally grown Korean herbs and seasonal New Zealand produce, Ockhee's version of Korean cuisine challenges traditional culinary techniques with modern innovation. Their vision is to redefine the image of authentic Korean dishes by focusing on flavour combinations and pairing them with house blend cocktails and selected natural wine.

OCKHEE – Korean Eatery

Given the compact footprint of the eatery (58m² including the back of house) the key design consideration is to maximise the number of seating without placing them in a generic manner hence creating a one-dimensional dining experience. The architectural solution is to feature an arrangement of custom-made furniture: the counter, the shared table and the bench seat. These furniture pieces allows the eatery to provide flexibility to cater for solo guests to larger groups, with options of bar seating, small tables, and group dining in a range of different experiences.

Rather than using an abundance of logos and colours, the selection of material and finishes was restrained to a rich and textural palette of walnut, stone and lime plaster render. This simple yet distinctive palette works harmoniously with the functionality of the furniture layout down to the resolute detailing. This design concept seeks to exemplify the same craft and meticulous care that Ockhee takes when preparing their dishes.

Rockcote Marrakesh plaster finish was selected for its elegant textural qualities on the dining space feature walls. Depending on the lighting condition, the texture and tone of the Marrakesh plaster vary subtly in appearance, adding a layer of richness that resonates with the material palette of the furniture pieces. On its own, the rendered walls provide a photogenic background to showcase Ockhee's dishes on social media, this is inseparable to today's hospitality business.

Resene Nocturnal was selected for the ceiling to bring calmness and depth to the intimate dining space. The deep neutral tone does not draw attention to itself, yet it appropriately complements the richness of the Marrakesh plaster and timber veneer. Resene Zylone Sheen in Resene Half Hammerhead was selected to demarcate the transitional space between the dining area, back of house, and restroom. This mid-toned blue grey provides a subtle hue to suggest a change in space while keeping within the neutral colour palette.

Derived from the Korean notion of nature as an entirety, people and objects are embodied in nature as a single entity. They seek to become part of the flow, rather than to stand out. This concept of harmony was fundamental in the selection of colour and material palette, creating an undisturbed balance in tone and texture within the space.
