Get Arty

Australia

Crayon was contracted by Seven Network Australia to produce a mobile, fun and versatile set for their new children’s TV show Get Arty.

TV setup

The set had to be able to be used in studio and on Location - not only did it have to have impact it also had to fit in the back of a station wagon! Versatility was key!

The design team created a dynamic mobile set based on the idea of a cube – with the premise that “All creatives have a box”. The set was made out of different sized colourful boxes, all stacked together. It includes a work bench and shelving and can be rearranged in many configurations depending on the need and location of the shoot that day.

The Get Arty basic form is a sectioned cube. The simplicity of the design allows for recognisable two and three dimensional graphic use, as well as the fun deconstruction of the shape to expand the set into various stand-alone parts. As a basic form it is very recognisable. It doesn’t demand attention or claim any artistic specialisation but offers a foundation to develop and nurture the participant’s creativity.

The design is about opening, exposing, revealing. This is achieved by the elements sliding open to reveal their contents. The set pieces rotates and changes depending on the artistic area to be featured. The cube has very practical benefits to the creative pipeline. By focusing on a simple form the need for repetitious changes and updates is easier to manage on a construction level as well as a directorial level as the shape helps dictate its function.

The basic colour scheme is based on the six sides of the cube. In practical terms the physical set designs would use these sides to create variety but the 3D versions can be any combination of colour. The palette is limited on each side to a section of the colour spectrum. There is a grey set in case of a special feature when a specific colour needs highlighting.

The colours needed to be gender neutral colour. Inspiration came from craft materials, from zippers and crayons to coloured acrylic, leading to a colour palette of Resene April Sun, Resene Ecstasy, Resene Colour Me Pink, Resene Wellywood, Resene Tree Frog, Resene Dancing Girl, Resene Curious Blue and Resene Alabaster. The colours specified for the set were then carried through to the logo and broadcast graphics on the show and influence any other extra dressing that is used.

The concept that the cube is a “creative living machine” aided in the creativity. The cube becomes excited when it is about to show us something, or when it is about to help. The drawers pop-out, giggle around and extend impossibly to show their contents. Each drawer holds the items required for that day’s crafty endeavour. The drawers all have different magical purposes, some contain equipment, others have answers and advice, while others hold projects.

The cube can be described as multi-use and full of surprises. The cube is the artists’ toolbox and is shown as an aid to the artists’ creativity without overshadowing their creations. It is a toolbox that holds raw materials for creation. It is a voicebox that offers subtle advice. It is a gallery for your imagination. The scope of what the cube holds is endless... “All creative people have a box.”
