Mt Eden Heritage home

Auckland

This charming villa is one of the oldest homes in Mt Eden dating back to the late 1800s.

When the client purchased this home it had been well maintained but was lacking warmth and a sense of place. The client has eclectic taste and a love for art, making this the perfect opportunity to bring a home, rich in Auckland history, back to life through the use of colour.

The home sits on a large piece of land with a beautiful garden that is a haven of mature trees and colourful flora. The interior consists of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms and a kitchen.

Upon entering the home, the hallway is panelled in kauri, from floor to high ceiling, with a view to three rooms. It was important to choose colours that complemented each other and the kauri floors, doors and panelling.

The colour palette was chosen for each room to be in symmetry with the hues of the art and objects that have been collected over a lifetime of travel. Some of the art is large, modern and bold while other works are delicate, small and historic.

Through the use of colour, the art has come alive, as has the house.

The colour scheme for this project runs from white through black and a mix of colours in between.

The master bedroom has been painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Smalt Blue which is a moody blend of blue and green. These two blended colours can be picked out individually with the changing light throughout the day, creating a dynamic space. Resene Smalt Blue creates a fantastic backdrop for a large aboriginal painting which has blue and green splattered within it.

Neutral bedroom

The spare room has been painted in Resene Zylone Sheen in Resene Albescent White. The room is south facing and needed to be kept light and bright as it is the first room that comes off the dark, kauri panelled hall. The pale linen colour reflects light around the room beautifully and makes the art and furniture stand out and take pride of place.

The small bedroom has been painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Beethoven. This gentle and warm terracotta colour brings to life a small, south facing bedroom. This room is close to the second living area where there is a lot of brown, apricot and pale peach and links with the use of the analogous colour. This is offset with the use of black and white furnishings and art.

Dark blue bedroom

The bathroom has been painted in Resene Lustacryl in Resene Quarter Silver Chalice. Choosing a semi-gloss finish and by using a colour that is known for its reflective, silky sheen of silvery grey the bathroom is timeless and chic and resonates with the history of the home.

The main living area is painted in classic Resene Zylone Sheen in Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue. This soft faded green creates a living space that is very tranquil. This room is next door to the master bedroom so this colour is viewed side by side with Resene Smalt Blue. The blue/green of both work harmoniously with each other, while creating two very different feelings within each room.

Dark cabinetry

The kitchen cabinetry is finished in Resene Blackjack to create a moody kitchen off-set against the kauri panelling and modernised with the stainless steel benchtops.

The rooms in this house are quite simple so the focus was to give each room a sense of warmth and character while staying true to the heritage nature of the home. This has been achieved through mixing bold, moody colours in some rooms and beautiful, calm neutrals in other rooms. Tonally all the colours work together.

This home has soul.
