Resene upcycling for good with Sarah Herring - Project 14

Finished project

You will need: Craft beads and thread Painter’s masking tape Resene testpots in: Resene Licorice (x 2), Resene Pale Rose, Resene Black and Resene Gold Testpot and detail brushes.

Tips and tricks: Start by giving the item a good dust and clean, then apply two coats of Resene Licorice using a testpot brush. It always pays to have more paint than you think you will need when you are painting a textured surface!

Step 1 Step one
Because this magazine stand was made from a textured, woven material, Sarah chose not to apply any sort of primer undercoat as it would be too difficult to get an even coverage.
Step 2 Step two
Masked off two triangle shapes and paint on two coats of Resene Pale Rose as a feature.
Step 3 Step three
Apply two coats of Resene Black to the metal frame of this magazine stand to refresh it.
Step 4 Step four
Paint a selection of craft beads next in three different colours: Resene Licorice, Resene Pale Rose and Resene Gold. The easiest way to paint beads is to thread them onto something first where they can’t move around too much and are held firmly in place. Sarah used some old plastic cord and made a line that could support them all while she painted and dried them. Use a detail brush for this, and apply two to three coats until you get good even coverage.
Step 5 Step five
Once the beads were dry, divide them into even patterns and thread them onto some craft cord. I then tied them on to either end of the magazine rack, as both a design feature to modernise it a bit, and a practical way to stop the magazines falling out!
Step 6 Step six
And there you have it. Add your magazines and enjoy your new look magazine rack!

Upcycling for Good

You can find a huge range of treasures, from ornaments and picture frames, to furniture and toys at your local Salvation Army store that you can easily upcycle with a little Resene paint and some imagination.

"Our Family Stores are full of treasures generously donated by members of the public. We value these donations and try our hardest to re-purpose and sell as much as possible. We’re all about re-using and recycling, so teaming up with Resene on Upcycling for Good was a perfect match. Resene’s products and tips are a natural fit with our pre-loved furniture and accessories, which are usually great quality but could sometimes do with a lick of paint to ensure they fly off the shelves.

Each year, nationally, our stores save 16,000 tonnes from landfill. This initiative increases the value of the donated product, improves the range of goods for our customers, and furthers The Salvation Army’s mission and Resene’s community activity.” Gareth Marshall, The Salvation Army's National Family Store Manager.
