Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 09

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: 400mm x 400mm x 400mm MDF storage box (ours came from Mitre 10 Mega), Low tack masking tape, Paintbrush, Pencil, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Black, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Alabaster, Resene Bright Red, Resene Broom, Resene Elvis, Resene Kermit and Resene West Side, Ruler

Top tip: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Half Alabaster and the skirting board with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Half Alabaster.

How to make rubik cube inspired game table

 
Step 1Step one
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the outside of the box and allow two hours to dry.
Step 2Step two
Apply two coats of Resene Black to the outside of the box and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 3Step three
Measure and mask each side of the cube into nine equal squares, as shown, using low tack masking tape.
Step 4Step four
Paint a few random squares on each side of the cube with one coat of Resene Elvis.
Step 5Step five
Paint a few random squares on each side of the cube with one coat of Resene West Side.
Step 6Step six
Paint a few random squares on each side of the cube with one coat of Resene Bright Red and Resene Alabaster.
Step 7Step seven
Paint the remaining squares with one coat of Resene Broom and Resene Kermit. Allow two hours to dry and paint a second coat of all six colours.
Step 8Step eight
Before the second coat has dried, carefully remove the masking tape. Allow two hours for the paint to dry.

Other ideas: Create a funky dice cube by painting a MDF box with Resene Nero and spots with Resene Alabaster.
