Pretty tidy

Craft with Resene, from the Australian Women's Weekly

Jazz up the bedroom with a gorgeous wall hanging and trinket trays to keep your jewellery in order and add some matching painted vases.

What you'll need

Wooden slat wall hanging (available ready-made from craft suppliers, or create your own from offcuts of timber)
Resene testpot paints – I used: Resene Raindance (light blue) Resene Fast Forward (dark blue) Resene Just Dance (dark peach) Resene Soulful (light peach)
Resene Wallpaper – I used: #98591 (floral) #34244-4 (geometric)

Old vases for revamping

Resene offers a huge range of stunning wallpapers that are available to order and purchase in small sample sizes. These are perfect in size (and price) for craft projects. I chose a cute floral from the Resene Kyoto collection for our wall hanging and round tray and a geometric print from the Resene Spots and Stripes range for the bigger tray.

Instructions

Paint all sides of the slats on the wall hanging with a colour that tones with your wallpaper. I used Resene Raindance. For a rustic look, apply just one coat of paint (see middle pic, right). Set aside to dry completely. While it dries, paint your hooks – I chose Resene Fast Forward for a slightly more dramatic look. Leave to dry and then apply a second coat.
Measure the slats of your wooden wall hanging or, if you are able to, trace around them onto the back of your chosen wallpaper with a pencil.
Using a sharp craft knife and ruler, cut out the measured/traced pieces (see pic, above). Glue wallpaper onto the wooden slats and leave to dry.

Note: Before cutting your wallpaper, think about how you want the finished product to look. You may want the pattern on each slat to be identical or you may prefer to use random parts of the wallpaper pattern.
Once dry, use pencil to lightly mark where you want to place your pin hooks. Remember to allow hanging space for longer necklaces. Push or lightly hammer the hooks in place. (If hammering, cover hook with card to protect the paintwork, and if the pin sticks out the back of the wooden slat, hammer it flat.)
For the trinket trays, measure and cut wallpaper to fit the inside base of each tray and glue in place. If your trays are not the correct shade to match the wallpaper, simply give them a light sand, wipe clean and paint with two coats of Resene testpot paint before you glue your wallpaper in place.

Matching vases

A lick of Resene paint can give new life to old vases. You may have some lying around at home; otherwise thrift shops are a great place to find interesting shaped vessels. Clean the vases first in hot water to remove any dust and grime. When completely dry, give them a light sand – this will help the paint to adhere better. Wipe any remaining dust off with a clean, dry cloth, then apply at least two coats of Resene paint. Allow to dry completely between coats. I used Resene Soulful, Resene Just Dance and Resene Fast Forward for our vases, creating a lovely harmonious look with the jewellery wall hanging and trinket trays.
