How to paint over wallpaper

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 26

You will need: Bucket with clean warm water, Clean cloth, Paintbrushes, Paint stirrer, Paint tray and roller, Resene Brush cleaner, Resene dropcloth, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene Paint Pot, Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Pot Pourri, Rubber gloves, Sandpaper, Sponge, Sugar soap

To get the look: Mark also freshened up the ceiling with Resene Ceiling Paint tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: If wallpaper is in a poor condition but sound, consider using Resene Sandtex to create a textured finish, helping to hide any imperfections in the surface.

How to paint over wallpaper

Step 1Step one
Following the product instructions, dilute the sugar soap into a bucket of clean warm water and stir. Wearing protective gloves, wash any grease or residue from the vinyl wallpaper and woodwork. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
Step 2Step two
Carefully stir the Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer.
Step 3Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer to the vinyl wallpaper, cutting in around the edges of the woodwork and corners of the room with a paintbrush.
Step 4Step four
Continue to apply the Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer to the vinyl wallpaper using the paint roller and tray. Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer dries quickly so it’s best to work fast.
Step 5Step five
Wash brush and roller sleeve in Resene Brush Cleaner. Allow Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer to dry for two hours.
Step 6Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Pot Pourri to the sealed wallpaper, cutting in around the edges of the woodwork and corners of the room with a paintbrush.
Step 7Step seven
Continue to apply Resene Pot Pourri to the sealed wallpaper using the paint roller and tray. Allow to dry and then repeat steps six and seven.
Step 8Step eight
Carefully paint woodwork with two coats of Resene Alabaster, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
