Painting a new window frame

If you’ve just had new white windows fitted, it’s easy to transform the bare wooden sills and surrounds with a matching clean white finish.

Project Description

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 27

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need:

  • Clean cloth
  • Low tack masking tape
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint stirrer
  • Putty knife or similar for filling

To get the look: The surrounding wall has been painted with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Cosmos.

How to paint your window frames

Step 1Step one
Fill any nail holes with wood filler and allow to dry.
Step 2Step two
Lightly sand the filled nail holes, as shown.
Step 3Step three
Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 4Step four
Carefully mask off the window frame and surrounding wall with low tack masking tape.
Step 5Step five
Stir the Resene Quick Dry with a paint stirrer.
Step 6Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the bare wood and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7Step seven
Stir the Resene Enamacryl with a paint stirrer.
Step 8Step eight
Paint the woodwork with two coats of Resene Alabaster, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Carefully remove the masking tape before the paint dries.

Other ideas: New wooden window surrounds can also be varnished with Resene Aquaclear but ensure that the nail holes are filled with an appropriately coloured proprietary wood filler.
