Blackboard clock

It’s easy to turn a humble wall clock into a bright and funky feature with a little bit of help from Resene.

Funky blackboard clock

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 30

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Chalk, Clean cloth, Lid from a Resene testpot, Low-tack masking tape, Paintbrushes, Pencil, Resene Blackboard Paint, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene California, Resene Quick Dry, Ruler, Sandpaper, Wall clock

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Barely There.

Other ideas: Use a combination of Resene Turbo with Resene Blackboard Paint (green, pink and blue) to create a brightly coloured clock for a child’s playroom.

How to paint and design a blackboard clock

Step 1Step one
Lightly sand the face of the clock to ‘key’ the surface. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 2Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the face of the clock and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 3Step three
Apply two coats of Resene California to the face of the clock, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4Step four
Use the testpot lid to draw a circle at each of the ‘12’, ‘3’, ‘6’, and ‘9’ o’clock positions on the face of the clock.
Step 5Step five
Mask off wedge-shaped sections, as shown, to represent the remaining numbers around the clock face.
Step 6Step six
Paint the circles and masked off sections with two coats of Resene Blackboard Paint, as shown.
Step 7Step seven
Before the second coat is fully dry, remove the masking tape. Allow paint to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Write in the numbers around the clock face with white chalk, as shown.
