Painting a metal shed roof

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 44

You will need

Difficulty level: Moderate

Bucket, garden hose with clean running water, garden sprayer, mineral turpentine, paintbrush, paint stirrer, sandpaper or wire brush and a stiff-bristled brush
A Resene Paint Pot and a Resene paint stirrer
Resene Moss & Mould Killer
Resene Paint Prep and Housewash
Resene ArmourX Rust-Arrest
Resene Summit Roof tinted to Resene Sponge

To get the look: Mark painted the rest of the shed with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Tranquil.

Other ideas: For a dark green effect paint the shed roof with Resene Summit Roof tinted to Resene Karaka.

How to paint a shed roof

Step 1

Step one
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water and fill the garden sprayer with the diluted solution. Spray the shed roof with the solution and leave for 48 hours.

Step 2

Step two
Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts water.

Step 3

Step three
Scrub the roof vigorously with the solution using a stiff-bristled brush and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to dry.

Step 4

Step four
Remove any areas of rust with sandpaper or a wire brush and spot prime with Resene ArmourX Rust-Arrest. Allow to dry.

Step 5

Step five
Clean brush with mineral turpentine.

Step 6

Step six
Apply one coat of Resene GP Metal Primer to the roof and allow to dry. Again, clean brush with mineral turpentine.

Step 7

Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene Summit Roof paint.

Step 8

Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof paint to the roof, allowing at least two hours between coats.
