Smarten up some old painted outdoor shelves with a little bit of help from Resene.

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 52

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 50mm galvanised flat head nails, Bucket, Clean cloth, Garden hose with clean running water, Hammer, Paintbrush, Previously painted garden shelves, Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Ciderhouse, Rubber gloves, Sandpaper, Stiff-bristled brush.

To get the look: Mark stained the fence with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene English Walnut.

Other ideas: For a soft pale effect, paint the shelves with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Chalk Dust.

How to repaint garden shelves

Step one
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water.

Step two
Wearing rubber gloves, thoroughly soak the shelves with the solution and leave for 48 hours.

Step three
Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts clean water.

Step four
Scrub the shelves vigorously with the solution using a stiffbristled brush.

Step five
Rinse off with clean water and allow to dry.

Step six
Lightly sand the shelves with sandpaper to ‘key’ the surface and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Ciderhouse to the shelves, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Fix the shelves to the fence with nails and touch up the nail heads with Resene Ciderhouse. Allow to dry.
