Block raised bed

Recycle some old concrete blocks into a smart raised bed with a little bit of help from Resene.

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 53

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Bucket, garden hose with clean running water, garden sprayer, old concrete blocks, paintbrushes, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Vista Blue, Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, Resene Sureseal, rubber gloves, spade, spirit level, stiff-bristled brush.

To get the look: Mark stained the background compost bin with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Cherrywood.

Other ideas: For a soft green effect paint the blocks with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Envy.

Step 1

Lay out the concrete blocks, as shown, to form a rectangular raised bed. Use a spade to even out the soil, where necessary, and a spirit level to ensure blocks are level.

In the garden sprayer, mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water.
Step 3

Wearing rubber gloves, spray and soak the concrete blocks with the solution and leave for 48 hours.

Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts clean water.
Step 5
Step five
Scrub the concrete blocks thoroughly with the solution using a stiff bristled brush.
Step 6
Step six
Rinse well with clean water and allow the concrete blocks to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Sureseal to any areas of bare concrete and allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Vista Blue to the concrete blocks, allowing each coat to dry.
