Wooden window

When timber surfaces are less than perfect, Resene Timber Surface Prep will help to solve the problem.

Paint and prep a wooden window

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 56

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, old wooden window (thoroughly cleaned and treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer if necessary), paintbrushes, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Dragon, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Timber Surface Prep, sandpaper, scraper.

To get the look: Mark painted the surrounding weatherboards with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Rockbottom.

Other ideas: For a fresh white look, paint the window frame with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Half Alabaster.

How to restore a wooden window frame

Step 1Step one
Scrape off any loose and flaking paint from the window surround and frame.
Step 2Step two
Sand smooth to ‘feather’ the edges where the existing paint meets bare wood.
Step 3Step three
Sand the rest of the window frame and sill to ‘key’ the surface. Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 4Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Timber Surface Prep to the window surround and frame and allow to dry.
Step 5Step five
Sand the Resene Timber Surface Prep to a smooth finish and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth. Repeat steps four and five if necessary.
Step 6Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry over the Resene Timber Surface Prep and spot prime any areas of bare wood on the window sill. Allow to dry.
Step 7Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Dragon to the window frame, surround and sill. Allow to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Dragon to the window frame, surround and sill. Allow to dry.
