It’s easy to create this simple blue succulent trough with a little bit of help from Resene.

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 72

Difficulty level:  Moderate

You will need:

  • 150mm x 20mm fence paling cut to the following lengths:
    • 2 x 350mm (front and back)
    • 2 x 150mm (sides)
    • 310mm (base)
  • 50mm galvanised nails
  • Clean cloth
  • Drill with 12mm drill bit
  • Exterior PVA glue
  • Hammer
  • Paint stirrer, paintbrush and pencil
  • Resene Quick Dry
  • Resene testpots of Resene Malibu (x2)
  • Sandpaper
  • Saw
  • Tape measure

To get the look:  Mark painted the background shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Saltpan.

Other ideas:  For a paler blue effect paint the succulent trough with Resene Anakiwa.

Step 1 Step one
Measure, mark and cut the fence paling into the lengths listed above.
Step 2 Step two
Assemble, as shown, to form a rectangular trough, fixing with PVA glue and 50mm nails. Allow glue to dry.
Step 3 Step three
Drill six 12mm drainage holes in the base, as shown.
Step 4 Step four
Sand the entire trough and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 5 Step five
Carefully stir the Resene Quick Dry.
Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to all surfaces of the trough and allow to dry.
Step 7 Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Malibu to all surfaces of the trough and allow to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Malibu to all surfaces of the trough and allow to dry.
