Create a handy bird feeder to attract feathered friends into your garden with a little bit of help from Resene.

How to make a bird feeder

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 81

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need

  • 4mm drill bit
  • 50mm screws
  • 100mm screws
  • Timber cut to the following sizes:
    • 20mm x 185mm x 300mm (back)
    • 20mm x 185mm x 120mm (base)
    • 20mm x 225mm x 45mm (front)
    • 20mm x 140mm x 45mm (sides)
    • 25mm x 25mm x 120mm (perch)
  • Clean cloths
  • Exterior filler
  • Exterior PVA glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Putty knife or similar
  • Resene Quick Dry
  • Resene testpot in your choice of colour, Mark used Resene Paddock
  • Sandpaper
  • Saw
  • Screwdriver
  • Tape measure

To get the look:  Mark painted the background fence with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Pipi.

Other ideas:  For a rich red finish paint the bird feeder with Resene Burnt Crimson.

How to make a bird feeder

 
Step 1 Step one
Measure, mark and cut the timber to the dimensions listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 2 Step two
Attach the back, sides and the base of the bird feeder, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and 50mm screws, drilling pilot holes first.
Step 3 Step three
Attach the perch and front of the bird feeder, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and 50mm screws, drilling pilot holes first.
Step 4 Step four
Drill six 4mm drainage holes in the base and attach the 100mm screw through the back of the bird feeder, as shown, drilling a pilot hole first. Drill a 4mm mounting hole in the centre top of the back.
Step 5 Step five
Fill screw heads with exterior filler and allow to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Sand the filled areas and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 7 Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the bird feeder and allow to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Paddock to the bird feeder allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
