1. Cactus hooks

What you’ll need:

  • MDF board
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Hacksaw
  • Sandpaper
  • Resene testpot paints
  • Angle brackets
  • Paintbrush

Colourful cactus hooks

Instructions:

Draw eight identical cactus shapes 13x13cm onto 9mm thick MDF board. On four of the cacti mark a W9mm x L75mm slit down the middle from the bottom to the centre of the shape. Repeat on the other four cacti but this time marking the slit from the top to the centre. Cut out each shape and all slits with a mini hacksaw or jigsaw. On all the pieces with the slit coming from the top, cut off one arm of the cacti so this side can sit against the wall. Sand all edges so they are smooth to the touch, flattening out any imperfections. Slot two opposite shapes together so you are left with four complete 3D cacti. Paint with two coats of Resene paint in four different complementary colours to suit your space. We have used Resene Bright Spark, Resene Rapture, Resene Groovy and Resene Morning Glory. Hang each hook using two screw-on angle brackets.

2. Chalk calendar

What you’ll need:

Chalk calendar

Instructions:

Rule a centre line down the length of a piece of 90x42mm, 1.2m long untreated pine. Measure out four house shapes with 5cm sides and 9cm centre peaks, four shapes with 7cm sides and 11cm centre peaks and the final two shapes with 9cm sides and 13cm centre peaks. Alternatively invert each shape into each other so there are less edges to cut at the sawing stage. Saw each straight line with a circular saw or hand saw creating 10 individual house shapes. Sand off any rough edges. Paint the front panel of three of the smallest pieces with Resene Quick Dry, then topcoat with Resene FX Chalkboard Paint in Resene Rapture. On the remaining seven pieces, paint the right-hand roof panel with either Resene Groovy, Resene Bright Spark or Resene Morning Glory. Coat the rest of the non-painted wood with Resene Aquaclear varnish. Allow to dry. Chalk on the date.

3. Beaded keyrings

What you’ll need:

  • Resene testpot paints
  • Resene Aquaclear
  • Assortment of beads
  • Leather thonging
  • Split ring

Retro beaded keyrings

Instructions:

Buy an assortment of different shaped wooden beads, a packet of split rings and some leather thonging. Paint your beads in an assortment of colours. We have used Resene Bright Spark, Resene Rapture, Resene Groovy, Resene Morning Glory, Resene Gold Dust and Resene Aquaclear varnish for the natural beads. Once dry, cut a piece of leather to double the length of your keyring. Thread it through the split ring and tie a knot 1.5cm out from the ring. Thread both ends of the leather through each of the beads knotting again at the base of the row.
