Background to mural creation:
The story of this mural is a very community oriented one. Mr Les French (nicknamed Froggie) an elderly local man, living in pensioner housing, had seen a mural painted the year before by Westland High School students, and saw the need for one on the tennis and squash club wall that faced his home. He discussed this with Westland mayor Maureen Pugh, who suggested this wall to the Youth Council as the next proposed site for a mural. The process of making the mural is equal to, if not more valuable than, the end product. The making of a mural is like the creation of a bridge, connecting the school to the business community, connecting adults and young people, bringing together individuals and groups that may not otherwise interact.
