Background to mural creation
The Mosgiel Guide Hall mural brings out the best aspects of guiding according to their district. The team visited all the units to ask for their suggestions of what to feature on the mural and noticed that the camping theme was mentioned quite a few times. This led them to include a tent on the mural, joined by 'Saddle Hill', a prominent feature of the Taieri, their version of 'Eliza Thornberry' (in a guide uniform) and the linking rings.

When a girl travels up through the guiding movement (e.g. from Pippins to Brownies) the link badge she receives represents the progression of guiding and personal growth. Each colour represents a division - green = Pippins, yellow = Brownies, blue = Guides and red = Rangers. This is why the four colour rings are important and why they included them.

It was the Pippin's idea to include Eliza. Because of this they put two Pippin's handprints in place of Eliza's hands. They felt that Eliza was the ideal character to represent the district as she is adventurous, in the outdoors a lot and loves and takes care of the animals and environment. The blended sky represents change, such as the recent change of the guiding system.

The silver metallic paint added depth to the mural and signifies all the bright sparks out there, which is why they have arranged for everyone in the district to participate and add their handprints. Everyone had lots of fun playing with the metallic paint on their hands instead of putting it on the board!

As the hall is currently awaiting a facelift the mural is painted onto a board to be attached after redecoration.
