Fence of friendsWhen the McMillan family first moved into their house they knew no-one in the area so one of the first things they did was paint their fence. Their three children were young and they absolutely loved getting into the fantastic rainbow of Resene colours that were left over from other projects. At the same time there was a testpots deal on the back of the grocery dockets and they would zoom straight to Resene from the shop to choose even more delicious hues. It took about a week and a half to complete the fence up the driveway, at times sheltering under the rather old and unsteady sun umbrella, and sometimes staring gloomily from the dining room window through the rain. The modus operandi was to have about 20 Resene testpots with various sized brushes all over the driveway and a big bucket of water to throw the used brushes in at the end of each session. The children were allowed to paint whatever they wanted and generally stuck to a few slats at a time painting up as far as they could reach, sometimes balancing on the two step bathroom stool to finish off part of a masterpiece. Their parents would join in later filling in the gaps and joining up disparate themes. Some of the colours used on the fence were: Resene Topaz, Resene Logan, Resene Kashmir Blue, Resene Danube, Resene Golden Sand, Resene Mandalay, Resene Harvest Gold, Resene Trinidad, Resene Festival, Resene Red Berry, Resene Sunflower, Resene Hot Chile, Resene Chateau Green, Resene Flame Red, Resene Blackberry, Resene Cinderella, Resene Shilo, Resene Jacksons Purple, Resene Victoria, Resene Lipstick, Resene Golden Glow and assorted others. They met everyone while doing the fence it was a great way to introduce themselves to the neighbours even if some of them were rather dubious about the rather colourful project! More recently they have added to the fence (and the family). It now goes along the road front too. It was wonderful to catch up with everyone again and find out all the news and meet their new dogs and sometimes, wives! Because it is so obvious, when people are coming to visit they say 'we're the colourful fence' and they know where to go. It has even been of use when summoning an ambulance! The McMillans definitely recommend painting your fence when you are new to an area, even if you just paint it the same colour and even if it really doesn't really need it. It is a great family project and by doing so you are immediately integrated into the community everyone stops to chat and introduce themselves and you can make friends for life, like they did.
