Right stripes
When the Haines purchased their home mint green and lemon dominated the space with floor to ceiling cupboards flanking a brick furnished wood burner on a fourth wall.

To transform the area the cupboards were demolished and the fire and surround removed. Beech flooring was laid and polished and is now host to the dining room table.

Adjacent to the door, a Rinnai gas fire was installed and combined with an Oregon fire surround purchased from a local recycler that was stripped just prior to installation. The existing skirtings were replaced with beech from the same recyclers.

The painting was a joint effort between husband and wife with Dave painting the walls and ceiling Resene Drover. Karen finished the look painting 40cm wide stripes below the picture rail using Resene Energy Yellow and instructions found in a Your Home & Garden magazine.

Finishing touches of a London blind and a leadlight window were created by Karen to complete the look.

The hardest part of the job was finding the right colours for the stripes with at least twenty combinations being trialled before the final combination was decided upon. Even now the Haines find it hard to believe that it's the same room.

Thanks to Karen and David Haines of Dunedin.
