Q&A   p. 25

Q. We want to paint our newly built house using Resene Hermitage. Can you let me know what type of gloss would be good to use? We are painting on Shadowclad® board and batten.

A. We recommend the CoolColour™ version of the colour in either Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) or Resene Lumbersider (low sheen). For maximum CoolColour™ benefit apply the topcoats over Resene Quick Dry primer. The CoolColour version of a colour reflects more heat than the same colour made using non CoolColour technology. Resene Sonyx 101 will withstand a longer time of weathering before chalking occurs.

Q. I am in the process of painting a child's high chair. I would like to use Resene Uracryl 403 as a finish coat because of its durability. I am concerned about the toxicity of that paint as to whether it would be suitable for that application? Would it be safe for children once it has dried hard please?

A. Once the Resene Uracryl 403 film is fully cured there are no significant issues associated with the use you intend. Allow to cure for at least two weeks in a well ventilated area before using.

August 2017

Q. I need a clear finish for a concrete block wall beside a swimming pool. What system should I use? It needs to be weathertight.

A. We recommend Resene XC-700.

August 2017

Q. I am repairing a MDF toy box, which I think has been powdercoated. What method and products can I use to prepare the surface for painting over? I've tried sanding, but it's taking a long time to get through the layers, and the surface is still too smooth for painting. I've had to sand back the toy box to remove chips in the paint, as well as get an even surface, in order to fill some holes etc.

Parts of the MDF box are dark blue with the rest white and I'd like to repaint it in Resene Tutti Fruitti, to match other projects I've done.

A. The following system would be our recommendation for a powdercoated surface:

Step 1: Thoroughly wash down with a 2% solution of Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner concentrate and water to remove all dirt, grease, stains, dust and other contaminants. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to dry.

Step 2: For best results, thoroughly wet sand with 220 grit wet and dry paper to aid adhesion. Wipe down with a cloth and water to remove sanding debris.

Note 1: While sanding will give the best results, this can be omitted where contact with the painted surface is low frequency.

Adhesion primer: 1 coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, leave to cure for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Topcoat with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

Q. Can I have a technical specification for the coating of aluminium fences and gates for a project in Wellington? The aluminium gates and fences are to be fabricated by Heritage Gates.

I assume the paint will need to be Resene Uracryl and that the aluminium would need to be degreased and have an additional, protective coat applied as well.

A. Degrease using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted, and used to label/data sheet directions.

Spray Resene Armourcote 220 to achieve a dry film thickness of 75 microns, and then finish with a spray application of Resene Uracryl 403 to achieve the same dry film thickness.

August 2017

Q. Eleven years ago I put a corrugated iron roof on a shed. It has overhanging vegetation. I now want to paint it. Should I etch it with something, or can I paint it with one of your paints. And if so, what type of paint should I use?

A. You will need to cut back the overhanging vegetation, then clean the roof down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted, and used to label/data sheet directions. If, after removal of the overhanging vegetation and brushing other debris off, there are signs of algae/mould/lichen then treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and again diluted and used to datasheet/label directions, and then clean down using the Resene Roof and Metal Wash.

Treat the ply with the Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to datasheet/label directions.

Prime the roof with Resene Galvo One, and then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof paint. Prime the ply with Resene Wood Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

August 2017

Q. I am planning a primary school project, which involves painting gumboots. What product would you recommend, that is also suitable for 7-8 year olds to use? It is an art based project and the boots are not intended to be worn.

A. Use Resene testpots for colour and you will need to prime the bare rubber with Resene Membrane Roofing Primer first. All products are waterborne.

August 2017

Q. I’m looking for advice on painting services lagging. We have Amarflex around pipes which are exposed to view for a portion of the ceiling.

A. Armaflex when exposed to weathering needs to be painted to protect the cabling from UV exposure. Any Resene waterborne paint can be used, for exterior it is usually an elastomeric paint such as Resene X-300E. For interior two coats of Resene Zylone Sheen will give the decorative finish and application by brush is the only practical way to apply the paint.

August 2017

Q. I am painting the inside of my home. I have oil based undercoat can I put water based paint over the top as my final coat?

A. Yes, Resene waterborne topcoats can be applied over Resene oil based undercoat.

August 2017

Q. Can I use Resene Zylone Sheen waterborne low sheen in a bathroom?

A. We don’t recommend Resene Zylone Sheen in a bathroom, as it is a standard acrylic. For a bathroom you need either a solventborne or waterborne enamel. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom (it’s a similar sheen level to Resene Zylone Sheen) for walls, Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom for trim and joinery and Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom for ceilings.

These Resene Kitchen & Bathroom products have anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender. Or you can use the standard versions of these products – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, Resene Lustacryl and Resene SpaceCote Flat.

If you prefer solventborne products, we have Resene Room Velvet (low sheen), Resene Ceiling Velvet (flat), and Resene Lusta-Glo (semi-gloss) or Resene Super Gloss (gloss).

August 2017

Q. We are thinking of using Resene Woodsman Whitewash over Strandboard® for the wall linings of our holiday home. Can you please advise what is the best method to apply this, how we should go about it and if it needs to be sealed after the whitewash has been applied?

A. Spray application will give the most uniform finish. Resene Woodsman Whitewash contains a low level of white tint and unless one is very careful, you can get an increase in the depth of white where roller overlap occurs. Finish with two coats of Resene Aquaclear over the Resene Colorwood Whitewash base colour. If you want a higher intensity of white, add Resene Colorwood Enhance White to one or both of the Resene Aquaclear coats.

August 2017

Q. I'm looking for an etch primer for cast aluminium boxes. These are Hammond enclosures generally, for guitar pedals. I have read a lot about window joinery in the FAQ but this is bare aluminium, and I will be covering it in a combination of testpots. Do I want Resene Vinyl Etch, Resene GP Metal Primer or something else? I will be spraying it on, 500ml is more than enough and I would prefer something white.

A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions then apply a thin coat of Resene Vinyl Etch primer.

August 2017

Q. I looked at a job which will be painting interior blockwork. I think they are called cinder blocks? They are about five years old. I will dust off the blockwork to try and remove any loose material. What's the correct paint method for carrying out this kind of work?

A. Cinder blocks have large random protrusions and if the tops are knocked off, this can reveal an open and porous surface and often cannot be filled with a paint system.

Based on the assumption that the blockwork is not glazed then the standard paint system for this would be a coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

August 2017

Q. What paint can I use as an undercoat on a vinyl wall mural? What surface prep tips would be needed before applying?

I have been asked to paint over two large vinyl wall murals, to match the other existing non-vinyl walls, which are Resene Parchment. The vinyl murals are not to be removed, as I thought this would damage the plaster walls and that it would be faster to just overpaint.

A. The only product we have is Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer which is designed to stop plasticiser migration from the vinyl into the waterborne paint layer. The system is not a clear system.

August 2017

Q. What preparation should be done if we are painting over already painted wallpaper? Is two coats of Resene Zylone Sheen Double Black White enough?

A. The paint needs to be cleaned using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. Assuming the existing paint is a waterborne paint and not a dark colour then should be no coverage issues with two coats of topcoat like Resene Zylone Sheen applied with the recommended roller sleeve.

August 2017

Q. If we use Resene Colorwood on an OSB internal lining, how easy will this be to clean?

A. The application of a waterborne coating like Resene Colorwood to OSB will see a degree of fibre swelling (cannot predict the degree of) which will alter the factory level of smoothness. I usually always recommend topcoating with clears to reduce this.

August 2017

Q. Can I use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel exterior/interior as an undercoat for an indoor cupboard I want to paint?

A. Resene Lustacryl is always used over a primed substrate. The product is a topcoat only and does not have the features required to act as a primer or undercoat.

August 2017

Q. I am looking for paint for the new flooring in our house. We will put 12mm plywood on the floor (over existing particle board). We will paint the floor first with white paint and then we will apply a few layers of polyurethane. What Resene product is best to put on the plywood?

A. If you use a waterborne white paint, you can then overcoat Resene Aquaclear.

August 2017

Q. I am spraying Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer on aluminium as it is thin and doesn’t tack like solvent prime etch paints. Is that ok?

A. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not recommended for spray application. It only requires a thin film to develop adhesion.

August 2017

Q. We are looking at painting our work bathroom and would like to use something different. We would like to use chalkboard paint, in a bright colour. Do you know if this is able to be used in a bathroom that can be damp at times?

A. You could use Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

August 2017

Q. I had a garage built a couple of months ago and want to paint the floor as soon as I can. Am I able to do this and what products should I use? I have heard that new concrete needs to be etched before painting and I’m a bit worried about the steel framing being harmed when I’m doing this or when rinsing afterwards.

A. Acid etching is rarely used now, you can prepare floor by diamond grinding. Your local Resene ColorShop should be aware of providers of concrete grinding service in your area. Then apply Resene Aquapoxy for flooring.

August 2017

Q. We have a painted brick home, approx 8 years old and 390m2. I want to investigate whether we can render the brick and/or repaint it to a deep charcoal. It is currently painted in a mid-grey paint that has some fading, but is in pretty good condition. It has no flaking or any other issues and I would like to know what preparation etc. would be required.

A. When changing to a much darker colour, there is always a chance that the heat associated with the colour change can cause the old paint to fail adhesively. The degree of failure is dictated by the number of existing number of coats and the original priming system.

Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, to give a chalk free surface. Then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry primer and finish with two coats of Resene CoolColour Lumbersider or Resene CoolColour Sonyx 101. The CoolColour™ system will reduce heat issues but we cannot guarantee that there will be no issues associated with heat.

August 2017

Q. We want to paint our gutters and downpipes. They are white PVC (plastic). Could you please tell me the best paint to use?

A. Use Resene Lumbersider or Resene Sonyx 101. Apply two coats directly on the clean substrate. If using dark colours, use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour.

August 2017

Q. I would like advice on what type of paint to use for a steel garage door which has been previously painted. We currently have a 'Lignite' colour on our guttering so would also be good to match this colour.

A. As a galvanised substrate, prime all bare metal with Resene GP Metal Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

August 2017

Q. Is Resene Lumbersider somewhat flexible? Or can an additive be added to increase its flexibility?

A. Resene Lumbersider is based on a conventional waterborne resin system, the resin system is not classified as elastomeric. Resene Lumbersider is extensible but not elastomeric.

We cannot alter the film properties of Resene Lumbersider to create a truly elastomeric paint. Resene Lumbersider can be brushed, roller and sprayed.

August 2017

Q. I am looking to paint inside veneer panel doors, e.g. bedroom toilet etc. These would be dated around the 1980s and will be painted white. Can you please advise what preparation work is required and what is the best paint to use e.g. Semi-gloss, full gloss? I am also looking to repaint the door frames - should this be semi-gloss or gloss to match the doors?

The doors have a vanished look but are made of a wood veneer. They are not a solid wood door so may have a pre-engineered brown stain when made. As mentioned in my previous email I want to paint them white with the door frames to match.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

August 2017

Q. We are getting renovations done, and are doing the painting ourselves. The builder has told us to prime the doors (external French doors) to protect them from weather before they install them. I understand that we may need to prime again so that the topcoats will stick as the primer can degrade. But my questions is how long will the primer act as a protection coat from the weather? Does it have to be painted with topcoats within a few weeks, or will it protect the wood from the weather/rain for several months until the weather gets warmer and drier?

A. It is about degree of weathering and primer type. We recommend Resene Quick Dry primer. When you come to topcoat check for primer chalking and then prep using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, then reprime.

August 2017

Q. Our home has Oamaru Stone as a cladding, can you recommend a product to kill moss and a sealer?

A. Use Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions to kill moss. Then apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel. To help control bio grow, apply Resene Deep Clean at the beginning of spring each year.

August 2017

Q. I'm writing in regards to a school project. It involves painting on wood and I need advice as to how/what to prime the wood with? After this we are going to apply colour paint from testpots.

I was also wondering what to use as a waterproof sealer/finish in order to protect the artwork and allow it to be hung outside.

A. Prime bare timber with Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat then apply two coats of testpot colour. Resene testpot colours are suitable for exterior exposure but for added protection for bright colours you can apply a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS over the colours.

August 2017

Q. I'm painting over wallpaper. Can I use waterbased enamel or is it better to use oil based?

A. If it is a vinyl paper, apply a seal coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer, then two coats of a standard Resene interior wall paint such as Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

August 2017

Q. I currently have copper gutters that are green/brown and I want to paint them. What do I need to do to prepare the copper and can I paint over the gutters with exterior paint or do I need to prime it first?

A. The greenish look is copper verdigris which occurs as the copper ages. To paint, removal of the verdigris is required and depending upon the depth and age, this can be a real challenge. Scrub down the surface with a 1:1 dilution of white vinegar and water, using a Scotch Brite pad will be the easiest way but it requires a lot of effort.

Rinse clean with fresh water, then apply a primer coat of Resene Vinyl Etch and finish with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint.

August 2017

Q. Can you please advise a suitable paint to use on new plasterboard board in lounge and bedroom areas? Also, what type of semi-gloss paint is required for door frames and skirting and what type of ceiling paint can be used in the bedroom, main areas and wet areas? The house is a new build.

A. For the new plasterboard board, apply Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer then two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Use Resene Lustacryl as the topcoat for door frames and skirtings.

You can use Resene Ceiling Paint in all areas except wet areas and use Resene SpaceCote Flat as the topcoat for wet areas. We recommend that a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat is used as an undercoat over Resene Sureseal (Aqualine® sealer) for wet areas.

August 2017

Q. I require a paint specification for repainting an external electrical switchboard. It is currently a steel box with a powder coat finish.

A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave to cure for a couple of days, then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

August 2017

Q. Can I paint an outdoor ceramic planter that is glazed on the outside?

A. Yes, ensure the glazed surface is clean, then apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (note the product is not designed to give film build or opacity, the thinner the better) and allow drying for 48 hours, and then apply two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint.

August 2017

Q. I want to order paint but I am unsure which type to go for, please could you advise on which would be best? We are renovating our old motorhome. The new interior ply wall coverings have been painted with oil based primer. What paint type from Resene would suit best? It needs to be hard wearing and without odour, as we will be sleeping in there.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and then two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. There will be a low odour but this should dissipate after 48 hours of good ventilation.

August 2017

Q. I have fibrous ceilings and have had my kitchen recently painted about a year ago. It is now peeling off in patches. The insurance is saying its workmanship. But I know the painter used the correct sealer and undercoat. This has happened in other rooms too. Some painters have said the fibrous reacts after many years because of what it was made of. Do you have any other reports of old ceilings doing this? What paint should I use?

A. The cause is probably due to the primer/sealer used for bare fibrous plaster. The Resene product for this is Resene Sureseal. Waterborne primers/sealer will not adhere to bare fibrous plaster.

August 2017

Q. I was dangerously exposed to 2 pot urethane foam about 40 years ago and was sensitised to the styrene. About 20 years ago I used a urethane varnish and had a moderate wheezing reaction using a proper filtered mask. I wish to brush paint some Aquaclear waterborne urethane varnish and wonder whether Resene is aware of it affecting old-fashioned urethane sensitised people. My reaction was extreme asthma like symptoms. I will use a mask and will be well ventilated but would like a practical answer, not a commercial take no risk approach.

A. Free isocyanate can cause sensitization which is seen as an asthma type reaction. However the sensitization only occurs if the isocyanate is inhaled as an aerosol. During spray application. There are a range of different isocyanate hardeners used each with a different sensitisation potential.

Resene Aquaclear is a low VOC (volatile organic compound) clear and contains no isocyanate in the manufacture of the resin or product so I see no reason why any isocyanate related reaction is possible with the product. The term urethane does not refer to isocyanate containing.

August 2017

Q. We have just had all our ceilings stripped of a 1970s asbestos-type covering (like Glamatex) and want to paint them. The surface has been left in quite good condition but we need to have them stopped in places and possibly skimmed. We've been advised to apply pigmented sealer before plastering but that seems the wrong way round to me. Should we have plastering done first then apply the pigmented sealer?

A. Apply a sealer coat of Resene Sureseal then plaster then re-seal.

September 2017

Q. My painter used a low sheen on trims and it is coming off. If wiped or I run my fingernail along it, it comes off easy. I don't think he sanded back the trims. I was told another way to fix it was to put Resene Lusta-Glo enamel over it and it would harden as it is a high traffic area. Is this right or what is the correct way to fix?

A. Sorry but application of more paint over the poorly adherent existing paint will not solve your issue. The existing paint will need to be removed by sanding and the surface then sanded before priming with Resene Quick Dry and re-topcoating with Resene Lusta-Glo or Resene Lustacryl.

September 2017

Q. Can you please advise a suitable primer for new timber and new Hardiboard®? We will be using Resene Lumbersider and Resene Sonyx 101 as our topcoats.

A. Use Resene Concrete Primer for new Hardiboard® and Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat for the timber.

September 2017

Q. What type of paint would you recommend for a ceiling in a steam room? It is James Hardie Villaboard® substrate.

A. I assume there is no extraction system; otherwise it wouldn't be a steam room. My recommendation would be three coats of Resene Aquapoxy applied over a seal coat of Resene ArmourBond.

September 2017

Q. I have an older style (probably 1970s) bronze coloured conservatory that I wish to upgrade. I propose to paint it white. Have you a paint that can be used satisfactorily, and if so, what preparation is required? Can it be done by brush, or does it require a professional spray?

A. Scrub down metal sections using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions. Apply Resene Galvo One then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

September 2017

Q. Do I need to use a sealer over GIB® ProMix All Purpose compound or can I put a finish coat straight over it?

A. We recommend a seal coat of Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer be applied prior to topcoating.

September 2017

Q. I want to paint my bathroom. For the rest of the house I am using Resene SpaceCote Flat on the ceilings and Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen on the walls. Can I use the same paint for the bathroom or do I need to use a different paint? Additionally, I am planning on applying a pigmented sealer first in the bathroom.

A. Both products are waterborne enamels and can be used for painting wet areas. For ceilings in bathrooms, I recommend applying a coat of Resene Quick Dry over the Resene Sureseal before applying the topcoats.

September 2017

Q. We are building a home and one of the materials is wooden weatherboard. What difference does your range of CoolColour paints have e.g. can we go a shade or two darker, as we would like to go as dark, as possible?

A. Suppliers of timber weatherboards will place an LRV (light reflectance value) limitation on colours that they will allow for their product. There is no difference between the LRV of a Resene colour made using standard or CoolColour™ pigmentation. What is different is the TSR (Total Solar Reflectance), this is a measure of heat reflection and the TSR of a CoolColour is always higher than the same colour made on non-cool pigments. While CoolColours are not cool to touch, the higher heat reflection does mean that Resene CoolColours reflect more heat, than the non-cool version of the colour - this reduces stress on the substrate.

September 2017

Q. Can you please advise me what the options are for white paint that will stick to polyethylene? We have some fish tanks that we want to paint, so are after a low toxic option if possible.

A. The only way we have found to get paints to adhere to polyethylene, is to heat to just melting, using a butane gas flame. This only applies to non-immersed surfaces.

September 2017

Q. I'm doing up a little bathroom, and am about to have GIB® Aqualine painted. What should I use?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal to bare Aqualine® and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene waterborne enamel kitchen and bathroom paints.

September 2017

Q. The paint on our exterior wooden window frames is crazy cracking after quite a few years. Is that because waterbased paint has been applied over oil based paint? I would like to repaint them with oil based paint so does that mean I will have to completely remove all the crazy cracking paint?

A. The effect you describe often occurs when a harder top coat is applied over a relatively softer base paint. Most often seen if traditional solventborne enamel is applied over a conventional waterborne paint. You will have to strip back to bare timber to repaint.

September 2017

Q. We are having an artist paint a 3m x 5m mural on a concrete block wall on a house - south facing - she spray paints it with solvent based paints. Currently the blocks are uncoated cinder blocks behind a tennis court. Firstly, what should I prepare and seal the wall with and secondly, what would I seal it with to protect once it is complete? I guess thirdly, what would I use to maintain it? I will put a metal flashing on the top of the wall.

A. Suggest that the block work is sealed with Resene Sureseal. Spray can paints are not that U.V. durable and we have no clear overcoat systems for this paint type in an exterior location to give UV and weather protection.

September 2017

Q. We used Resene Lumbersider low sheen to paint our exterior. There appear to be some water marks on the fascia board. However, after three coats of paint the marks are still quite visible. Is there any way to get rid of those marks?

A. The markings on the Resene Lumbersider are probably as a result of condensation. I suggest you try to remove it by washing with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. The other step would be to see if the colour is due to mould.

Do a test on an area with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions.

September 2017

Q. Some of my joinery has some scratches from renovation. Is it possible to paint it or touch up with any Resene paint to match the same colour?

A. We would need to see if the colour can be matched using a Resene colour. Then sand back the scratch, spot prime with Resene Quick Dry and then apply two coats of the matching colour.

September 2017

Q. We have a rusticated weatherboard, two storey macrocarpa home. It was painted over 20 years ago in Resene Lumbersider, in a red tone. We are now looking to repaint in Resene All Black; do we need to use an undercoat or primer first? The paint and weatherboards are in great condition still. The window frames and bargeboards are white.

A. When changing to a much darker colour, there is always a potential for delamination of the first coat, due to added heat stress. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and then apply the two coats of the CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour. Ensure the existing paint finish is washed down, using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions.

September 2017

Q. I need to paint the inside of my new house which is bare plasterboard. What would be the best undercoat to use? Someone mentioned "high cover", is that something you sell?

A. Our standard system for DIY painting is a sealer coat of Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer and then two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Zylone Sheen for non-wet areas. For wet areas e.g. bathrooms, apply a sealer coat of Resene Sureseal to the bare Aqualine®, then a coat of Resene Quick Dry and two coats of a Resene Kitchen and Bathroom waterborne enamel, such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom.

September 2017

Q. Which paint can I safely use to paint my baby's cot?

A. Any Resene Environmental Choice paint may be used, such as Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. Leave the paint system to cure for at least two weeks then wipe down with warm water and a cloth before placing into service.

September 2017

Q. I have a red brick house and I want to paint it this coming summer. What paint and sealer/undercoat do I need to use for this? The bricks are not glazed.

A. If there is any areas of moss/mould/lichen, treat these with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions and leave to dry.

Apply a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) or Resene Lumbersider (low sheen). If using dark colours, we recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour.

September 2017

Q. We have just renovated a bedroom for the baby we are expecting in November. What would be the best undercoat to put straight onto the plasterboard? Also, is there a specific ceiling paint we should be using? We would like to keep the theme of wood and white throughout our house, as we have native wood (which we will keep around the windows, skirting and scotia). We quite like the colour Resene Alabaster or a shade of it, but are yet to try a testpot of the colour in the room. Is there something in Resene paint that will deter flies from pooping on it?

A. Paint bare plasterboard with Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer then Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Use Resene Ceiling Paint for the ceiling. Resene Fly Deterrent can be added to the ceiling paint; it is a deterrent but contains no active to kill flies. Its efficacy will diminish over time.

September 2017

Q. What is the hardest wearing semi-gloss, for interior window and door frames?

A. Resene Lusta-Glo solventborne enamel.

September 2017

Q. Our painter has purchased a flat ceiling flat from Resene Albany in Resene Pearl Lusta and it appears to have a slight sheen in it. This is something we have never come across before. We will leave it over the weekend to see how it settles.

A. If it was Resene Ceiling Paint then after a few days it should dry to a flat finish.

September 2017

Q. I have a painted block wall in my basement that also forms a retaining wall. The paint has bubbled in places. If I scrape off the bubbles, can I then use Resene HydraBlock to waterproof the wall, before repainting or can it only be applied to bare concrete block?

A. Resene HydraBlock is designed for direct application to bare concrete/cementitious substrates only.

September 2017

Q. Does Resene have a clear, breathable sealer for blockwork? How long between recoats and would it make the masonry look wet?

A. The best product to meet most of what you require is Resene Solventborne Aquapel. However, the product is a water repellent treatment only and will not render the surfaces weathertight.

Q. I am about to repaint some old totara posts. What should I use for this, and would it be a similar system to that for cedar?

A. Resene TimberLock yes, but then Resene Quick Dry as the primer, as oil based paints will not dry over totara timber. Wipe excess Resene TimberLock off at time of application, and then leave to dry for at least 48 hours before applying the Resene Quick Dry.

September 2017

Q. We have cedar wooden garage doors that need some attention! Obviously we need to sand them before we coat them. What would you suggest using? We want a natural wood/timber style finish.

A. If there is no signs of mould/algae present, then scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions. Then apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil. Note this will need regular recoating (usually every two summers).

September 2017

Q. How soon can I paint X-200 or a similar paint, over exterior sand/cement plaster? Not a critical situation, it is a foam insulated plinth detail on a concrete slab edge, below a concrete block wall.

A. Resene LimeLock should ideally be applied as the new plaster is touch dry. You can then apply the Resene X-200 over the primed surfaces; colour will determine how soon the topcoats can be applied.

September 2017

Q. I am very tired of interior paint finishes these days, that mark very easily and cannot be cleaned (I am talking paint on new plasterboard). The paint appears to be almost, chalk like and every touch marks it. Surely you can get a quality acrylic wall paint that has a strong surface that one can wipe without causing smudges and shiny patches? What does Resene have that I can use on a new build that is very low to no sheen?

A. The move to very low gloss level paint finishes is one of the main reasons why painted surfaces, subject to cleaning and touching, can mark easily.

When a flattish paint is wiped, there can be burnishing, which is a polishing effect that is due to the flatting pigments, used to make the low gloss paint and the relatively, low amount of resin binder in these paints.

If the application conditions are outside of the ideal for curing of a waterborne paint, there is the possibility of surfactant leaching, which is a partitioning to the surface, of wetting agents required for film formation. When an area is wiped down, the surfactant layer is removed and when dry, can been noticeable as a differing gloss level from the surrounding areas.

For a low sheen waterborne topcoat, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen will give the best chance of giving you a paint that has the features you are seeking.

September 2017

Q. Do you have a flat, matt, eggshell or low sheen finish for wooden furniture?

A. We do make two products that can be used for this – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen and Resene SpaceCote Flat. Both have been used by many customers to finish wooden furniture. Resene ColorShops stock both products and they are available in thousands of colours.

September 2017

Q. I have a painted concrete deck and path. The previous owners painted it with a lighter colour, which has flaked and worn off in places. I have waterblasted to remove this flaking paint and expose the original darker colour. Could you please advise the appropriate products to repaint with? I would like to repaint with a charcoal colour, which was the colour it was originally painted.

A. We have two products that would be suitable, depending on the surface finish you are requiring. Resene Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path and Resene Walk-on. These are both based on tough, flooring grade, acrylic resins.

If the substrate already has a significant texture and you are not looking to add to that, the use of Resene Walk-on will be perfect, as the texture will telegraph through.

If the substrate doesn't have a lot of texture and you want to add to this, then Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path should be used which contains an aggregate, to give non-skid properties.

September 2017

Q. Steel RSJ coated with lead based paint. Which system should be used to contain and finish without stripping?

A. The lead will be contained within the primer, so as long as that primer has good adhesion to steel substrate, then there should be no issues with release of lead into the environment. The key is that if any lead based paint flakes are removed from the surface that all efforts are made to contain this, as per the attached OSH guidelines.

If this is an exterior, any bare areas or corrosion should be spot primed with Resene Armourzinc 120, followed by two coats of Resene Uracryl 403 (a test patch should be done to confirm compatibility with existing product).

If this is an interior, spot prime any bare areas of metal or corrosion with Resene GP Metal Primer, followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl (a test patch should be done to confirm compatibility).

September 2017

Q. I want to paint a kitchen and bathroom vinyl lino floor. I've been recommended Resene Enamacryl (with Resene Sureseal sealer) or Resene Uracryl or even Resene Walk-on paint. Can you please tell me which one is the best to use?

A. The recommended system would be one of coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and two coats of Resene Walk-on.

September 2017

Q. Do I need to use primer or undercoat between a coat of Resene Broadwall Prep & Seal and Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen?

A. There is no primer needed between Resene Broadwall Prep & Seal and Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

September 2017

Q. I would like to paint a caravan canvas awning. What paint would I use? What preparation would be necessary and would the paint stand up to being in a windy environment? The awning is permanently up.

A. We do not have a purpose built system but you could try this: three coats of Resene Lumbersider, with the first coat thinned out 15% with water. Canvas can have a hard time accepting coatings.

September 2017

Q. What is the best way to paint over a stippled ceiling?

A. Generally the most straightforward painting method is brushing and rolling. It is possible to spray ceilings, if you have the appropriate equipment and are practised in spray painting.

September 2017

Q. I have an octagon table that is cleaned and sanded, ready for painting. Originally I was going to stain it, but I am now wondering about painting it a bright colour. How does this go for wear and is application easy?

A. Assuming the table is timber, for painting the table, apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take up to a month to fully cure. In the early stages, the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion, as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

September 2017

Q. Could Resene Aquapoxy for flooring be used on a kitchen floor, in a residential setting?

A. Resene Aquapoxy is a great option for a residential kitchen floor. The recommended system would usually be one coat of Resene Aquapoxy thinned down 10% with water and two coats of Resene Aquapoxy at the normal spreading rates (as per data sheet).

September 2017

Q. I want to paint some plastic garden pots, what paint should I use?

A. Polyethylene and polypropylene are exceptionally difficult and even special adhesion promoted primers do not develop what would could be considered good adhesion. For this reason we don't recommend painting these types of plastic.

Unplasticised PVC can be painted directly with our waterbased topcoats like Resene Lumbersider or Resene Lustacryl. Dark colours should be avoided to prevent warping.

September 2017

Q. What paint can you use for timber flooring? Do you need timber paint then a topcoat sealer for longer wearing or could you use the concrete paint? I want to sand off the timber sealer and paint the floor boards white.

A. Assuming at this stage you have timber flooring that is clear coated with a polyurethane type product and you are looking to change to a white pigmented system, there are two routes you can go down:

1. Only lightly sand the existing polyurethane coating and apply 1 x coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and 2 x coats of Resene Walk-on tinted to a white of your choice.
2. Completely remove existing clear film back to bare timber and apply 1 x coat of Resene Quick Dry and 2 x coats of Resene Walk-on.

If the existing film is in good condition and has good condition then proceed with option 1 as it is significantly less labour intensive but if the condition of the coating is poor then a full sand back to bare timber is required.

September 2017

Q. We are building a house and the exterior cladding is plywood. We really would like to use a colour like Resene Half Ironsand but we are worried that it will get very hot. How effective are CoolColours at repelling the heat?

A. A lot of cladding manufacturers will only uphold their guarantees if set LRV (light reflectance values) are used. Traditionally they state that the cladding may only be painted with LRV values greater than 30-40. Most of the darker colours fall below that.

A darker colour in CoolColour™ technology will never perform as well as a light colour but it makes a significant difference. The LRV value remains the same (reflectance in visible spectrum of light) but near-infra red absorption is reduced so the substrate doesn't heat up as much, which means it is subjected to less ‘thermal shock’ and stress. This means a decreased chance of damage to the substrate.

So CoolColours will never completely offset the reduced durability of using darker colours but it makes a difference.

September 2017

Q. I have got wooden window frames painted in oil based paint which need repainting. I have sanded them back (to bare wood in some places). Where there is bare wood I have used Resene Wood Primer general purpose, and then completely under coated with Resene Enamel Undercoat general purpose. How many enamel topcoats do you recommend I apply?

A. You will only need to apply two topcoats of enamel. If these are exterior windows then the only enamel that can be applied is Resene Super Gloss as lower sheen levels chalk when exposed to U.V.

September 2017

Q. I have a 20 year old butynol roof which needs painting. What is the best solution?

A. You can paint butynol but this is only to protect the material from weathering. If there are tears or breaks in the butynol layer we cannot offer a paint system that will give waterproofing. In the event the latter does not apply the following can be undertaken: wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and prime with Resene Membrane Roofing Primer then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. It’s best to avoid dark colours but if you choose a dark colour then use the Resene CoolColour™ formulation of the colour which will give more heat reflection from the painted surface than the same colour made using conventional colourants.

September 2017

Q. Is your Resene High Temp Black Enamel, suitable for painting a Belling oven? I want the matt black look to go with a honed granite bench. I also need it to be washable without leaving streaks. Harvey Norman advertises that they can paint it your choice of colour but they previously said they couldn't do matt as it is unable to take heat. Is your paint suitable and serviceable in a kitchen?

A. The finish can take up to 500°C, but it is not a finish that is meant for regular washing. It could be wiped clean, but I would expect it to burnish if scrubbed. It also needs to be cured at 200°C, to be serviceable. Because of these reasons it doesn’t suit your project.

September 2017

Q. Can I topcoat with Resene waterborne semi-gloss enamel, over what I think is oil based paint, on interior trim or do I have to use an undercoat?

A. Our Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel will adhere well to aged interior enamel if sanded thoroughly, but we always recommend a tie-coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat.

September 2017

Q. We have painted our bathroom with Resene paint. We put on two coats of Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer, then two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. After 8 weeks we are still getting what we have been told are crying walls. It is like the leaching of colour, running down the walls. Is this because of the colour or the type of paint?

A. What you are experiencing is surfactant leeching. Surfactants are water soluble products, present in all waterbased paint. They are a necessary evil and are required to be present. Over time, especially in bathrooms, these migrate to the surface with moisture, which then evaporates leaving a glossy, soapy and sometimes oily residue. These are easily cleaned with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, but if left for a long period of time, can be stubborn to remove. This issue is usually encountered if someone showers too early after application of the paint system.

The good news is that there is only a limited amount present in the film and they will stop over time, once removed. The key is to ensure good ventilation in the bathroom and staying on top of removal of them.

I must stress this is not an application or a paint failure, but just a reality when using waterbased paints in bathroom scenarios.

September 2017

Q. I have a client who wishes to have a paint finish in their commercial kitchen (prep and washing areas) to comply with performance criteria G3.3.2 and clause G3/AS1-2.1 walls within food preparation and washing areas to ensure surface shall be imprevious and easily cleaned. Plasterboard lining will either be GIB® Aqualine or Magroc Magnesium board.
Could you please advise if my paint specification is going to be okay for this situation?
Paint spec: Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer with 2 coat min topcoat of Resene Enamacryl. Or should I use Resene Sureseal as the sealant?

A. Swapping to the following system will be suitable (a tighter crosslinking barrier that has lower moisture vapour transmission rates):
One coat of Resene Sureseal
Two coats of Resene Room Velvet or Resene Lusta-Glo (enamel).

September 2017

Q. Could you please provide me with a paint specification for painting steel frame work? We have an external glasshouse/conservatory structure (new UB portal frame with glazed cladding over) and we wish to paint the new steel portal frame.

A. The system you would be looking for is a PUR5 system as per AS/NZS 2312.1:

Preparation:
Refer to SIPDS No. 4 Metal / Steel and Spec Sheet 4:5/1 ; 4:5A/1 ; 4:6/1

Primer / Sealer:
1 coat of Resene ArmourZinc 120 - zinc epoxy primer applied to achieve a dry film thickness of 75 microns

Topcoat System:
1 coat of Resene Armourcote 510 - high solids epoxy.
2 coats of Resene Uracryl 403 - gloss.

September 2017

Q. I am repainting exterior weatherboards but I am unsure what the timber is. I am removing the previous coatings back to bare timber. I have bought Resene Lumbersider as a topcoat in Resene Friar Grey, but want to know if I should use Resene Quick Dry as an undercoat or oil based undercoat. I'm also using Resene Timber Surface Prep to help smooth out some cracks. The north face gets a lot of sun.

A. It looks like either matai or totara that has been used, so in both cases Resene Quick Dry would be the correct primer to use.

September 2017

Q. I have Shadowclad® (rough sawn look) that has been up 13 years. It was stained with Resene Woodsman in Resene Tamarind and has been restained since then.

The majority faces east and south and a small amount faces north. I have learned that stain is no longer an accepted coating and I wish to extend its life. Should I use undercoat and primer or can I go straight to Resene Lumbersider or another product? 40%+ LRV needed.

A. Painting over this wood stains cannot be done until the stain has weathered usually for at least 12 months. Then stained cladding is best scrubbed down, using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to remove unbound pigments, then primed with Resene Wood Primer and then overcoated with two coats of any Resene exterior acrylic paint like Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss).

If the stained cladding has undergone extended weathering, or is showing signs of greying of the timber, which occurs due to prolonged U.V. exposure of bare timber, then an additional coating step is required. After the wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, the cladding needs to be pre-treated with Resene TimberLock, prior to application of the Resene Wood Primer. Resene TimberLock reinforces the weathered timber, to ensure adhesion of the subsequent paint system. In general, the Resene TimberLock step is usually required for the most exposed elevations, such as the north facing elevation.

September 2017

Q. Can we use the Resene Resitex Plastercote system over brick?

A. There is no reason why Resene Resitex Plastercote can't be used on a brick wall scenario. The key is to apply a coat of Resene Sureseal prior to application of Resene Plastercote and to ensure the bricks are free from any areas of moisture ingress or efflorescence, as this can lead to system failure.

September 2017

Q. We need to demarcate parking bays by painting lines on an existing (old) tarmac surface. We need to paint lines over existing faded lines and also new lines on the tarmac. Please recommend a product and method preparation for DIY.

A. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path would be suitable. The areas of worn asphalt are not a concern as the weathering allows the product to adhere well. A thorough wash with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to remove any surface contaminants is all the prep that is needed. Once rinsed and dried, two coats applied at the attached data sheet coverage rates is needed.

The areas of existing marking are more concerning. There is a large amount of different road marking coatings available and they are all made up of different resin systems. Do you know which product was applied previously? And does this coating still have good adhesion? I ask this as Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path may not adhere to all existing coatings. It may pay to do a test patch for adhesion.

September 2017

Q. Why does my bottom trim feel rough to touch? Our painter painted over original trim with low sheen paint. Which I didn't like and asked him to paint it the same as the doors and doorways which he did with semi-gloss enamel but it feels rough, He also used an oil based primer.

A. It is difficult to say exactly why it feels rough from this description.

It is possible there is dust or grit in the paint. This can easily be picked up from the floor around the skirting during painting and drying. Or it is possible there are brush marks that have dried in the paint. A product like Resene Brushing Additive is specially formulated for addition to Resene waterborne enamels to reduce brush marking and produce a smoother finish on trim and joinery. It could also be the skirtings were rougher (more imperfections) in the first place. This could have been a consideration when the painter painted them with a low sheen finish initially.

September 2017

Q. We have stripped wallpaper off the plasterboard. Do we need to prime the plasterboard before we apply the topcoat?

A. Yes you will need to seal the plasterboard and plaster before painting topcoats. For this we recommend Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer.

September 2017

Q. We have bought a new house that has been painted with an off-white which we find marks. Would you suggest a different product or colour?

A. The paint product I would recommend is Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. It is very washable and durable. Stronger colours don't tend to highlight marks as much as the light white colours can. I have used Resene Double White Pointer, Resene Parchment and Resene Double Concrete over various repaints over the years. I have found them to not show up too many fingermarks etc despite having a family and a couple of dogs.

September 2017

Q. I want to paint some new freestanding walls and planters in my garden. They are plastered concrete blocks, and are three months old. The interior of the planters has been sealed. All I want to do is paint the exterior of the planters and walls. What product should I use? Do I need a sealing or undercoat?

A. Ensure that the concrete is clean and dust free. Prime the bare concrete with Resene Concrete Primer. Then apply at least two coats of a waterborne topcoat - Resene Lumbersider will give a nice low sheen finish to these areas, or alternatively you could use a product like Resene AquaShield it is a mineral effect flat finish (often described as a Mediterranean effect).

September 2017

Q. I was wondering about using your Resene Deep Clean? Does it contain anything that may affect butynol underneath porous tiles?

A. Resene Deep Clean can be used on tiles and is a mix of surfactants that will not affect the butynol.

October 2017

Q. My pitched ceiling is made of rough sheets of ply and timber beams that have been painted and the ply looks whitewashed. I want to completely paint it. What type of paint should I use? i.e. ceiling paint or Lumbersider as it is self-priming? It looks like rough ply sheets painted and either ragged off or just one thin coat of white paint. There are screw holes visible. I also want to do similar to the stairs.

A. For a painted finish, I would suggest applying a coat of Resene Quick Dry followed by two coats of either Resene Ceiling Paint or Resene SpaceCote Flat.

It would be difficult (if not impossible) to hide the screw holes when using a clear or semi-transparent product. I think most people don’t fill them and just leave them exposed. You could use Resene Colorwood Whitewash. It would need overcoating with Resene Aquaclear on the walls, and at least three coats of Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K or Resene Qristal ClearFloor 2K for the stairs. I would suggest doing some trials with the Resene Colorwood Whitewash on off cut just to make sure that it gives you the look you want to achieve and a chance to practice application before you start.

October 2017

Q. I want to repaint the interior of an 18 year old home and want advice on what we need to do. The bulk of the walls are painted in Resene Gin Fizz. We are wanting to repaint it in a pale neutral greyish colour in an easy care paint. We also have the bathroom and toilet that is currently painted in oil based enamel paint in quite bold colours. Again we want a pale neutral tone in modern bathroom paint. Above the shower we have a bad problem with mould and the paint has blistered and flaking off.

A. Ensure the walls are clean using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions. If the walls are in sound condition simply repaint them using Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. The mould in the bathroom will need to be treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. The loose flaky paint will need to be scraped back to a sound surface and the edges sanded to a smooth finish, you may need to use some filler to smooth these areas out. Spot prime the bare or filled area with a coat of Resene Sureseal. The old oil based enamel paint will need to be sanded thoroughly, and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry. If the ventilation in the bathroom is very good you could use a waterborne Enamel like Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom for walls and ceilings. If the ventilation is not so good i.e. gets condensation and steam settling on the walls and ceilings then use Resene Room Velvet which is an oil based low sheen finish.

October 2017

Q. I want to paint a weathered cedar weatherboard house.

A. Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then thoroughly scrub with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions; using a short hard bristled scrubbing brush is ideal. Apply a coat of Resene TimberLock to condition the weathered cedar before painting as it can be difficult to sand. Prime using Resene Wood Primer. Then apply two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss acrylic.

If your substrate is previously coated in a mineral oil based wood finish, it must continue to be coated in the same finish it has already been coated with.

October 2017

Q. What sort of paint would be best on my fibreglass motorhome? I have one small panel that has been replaced with a slightly different shade of white. I want to match it up.

A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Sand painted surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper and dust off. Apply a prime coat of Resene Armourcote 221 primer and finish with two coats of a Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat.

October 2017

Q. I would like to paint my douglas fir ceiling white (or if it's a better option I could white wash it). It has never been stained or varnished previously. Do I need to use a stain blocking primer?

A. Make sure the timber is clean and dusted. Apply a coat of Resene StainLock then at least two coats of a Resene waterborne topcoat like Resene SpaceCote Flat.

October 2017

Q. I am repainting a corrugated iron roof that has some red rust starting to show through. I am getting mixed messages about whether to use a rust converter or not.

A. Resene does not recommend using rust conversion primers for treating areas of rust. We have limited confidence in rust convertors giving long term corrosion control despite the product description. Clean back any light corrosion with a nylon Scotch rite scouring pad or similar. For heavier red rust clean back by sanding with 80 grit sandpaper or a 3M rust and paint disc. This should be confined to the red rusting areas only. This will avoid damaging the protective galvanised layer, which will simply lead to more rusting. Apply a coat of Resene GP Metal Primer. Areas showing significant red rusting will require an additional coat of Resene GP Metal Primer. You could use Resene Rust-Arrest on the red rust areas, but it does not adhere well to the adjacent galvanised surfaces as it reacts with the zinc.

October 2017

Q. What products can I use to change the colour of my grey patio pavers to an off white or beige colour?

A. Assuming the pavers are made from standard porous concrete with a slight profile, clean the surface using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Rinse clean with freshwater and allow drying until free of excess surface water. Prime with one coat of Resene Walk-on thinned 10% with water. Allow two hours before applying two finishing coats of Resene Walk-on.

October 2017

Q. Is there any specific paint you can recommend to use as a painted projector screen on a plasterboard wall?

A. We don't have a specific paint made for this application but we have recommended Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Silver Sand as wall projection paint for other projects in the past.

October 2017

Q. What is the best/recommended type of paint to use behind a glass splashback for a kitchen bench?

A. We supply Resene Imperite to the splashback industry. The product needs to be spray applied and back coated. The glass used is low iron glass. If you apply to standard glass the green tone of the glass has a dramatic effect upon the colour viewed through the glass.

October 2017

Q. We are about to sell a rental property. Can you please give me advice on removing mould that has come through on a painted toilet cistern?

A. I recommend that you treat the mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. However if the mould is growing through the paint then it may need to be stripped back to the level, treated with the Resene Moss & Mould Killer before repainting.

October 2017

Q. We have an old pine deck. I have waterblasted preparing to stain (not paint) for the first time. I am wondering what the differences are between a timber stain and decking oil? Which coating will give better protection from black mould? Which is more water resistant?

A. Some timber stains are not suitable for a deck. For your situation I would recommend that you give the deck a good treatment with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions and for an old weathered pine deck I would recommend you use Resene Woodsman Wood Oil.

October 2017

Q. I am looking for a vivid white, acrylic Gesso canvas primer.

A. Resene Quick Dry acrylic primer undercoat is the ideal primer undercoat for both stretched and unstretched canvases. A very flexible, easy to apply coating, Resene Quick Dry has excellent opacity and provides a very receptive finish for topcoating.

October 2017

Q. I have tongue and groove match lining and plasterboard lining in a kitchen/dining area. I am thinking of painting both with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss. They are both painted at the moment. The tongue and groove is painted with Resene Lustacryl and the plasterboard is painted with an acrylic. Would there be any issues with using the same paint?

A. I see no issues with doing this, as long as you are happy with a semi-gloss finish on the plasterboard.

October 2017

Q. I am supplying my client with stainless steel flashings for a job. He needs to paint them to match his cladding colour. What primer would he need to use on stainless steel before painting?

A. New flashings must be degreased and primed, prior to topcoating. Resene Roof and Metal Wash can be used to degrease and clean the metal surface. Resene Vinyl Etch Primer can be used as the adhesion primer. Then apply two coats of a waterborne topcoat like Resene Sonyx 101.

October 2017

October 2017

Q. Can you paint over the top of Seratone® wallboard in a wet area?

A. The following can be used for areas with the exception of the actual shower lining/shower stall area. Use Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner to ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. If it is the shower lining/shower stall area we do not recommend painting.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating.

Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate.

October 2017

Q. Our two year-old got his hands on a ball point pen and decorated a couple of walls and a door. My guess is that no cleaner will take this off so would need to repaint the affected walls.

Can you please advise, other than a topcoat, should we be using any product to remove the pen before painting? I've heard that simply painting over the marking won't work?

A. The pen marks should be spot primed with either Resene Sureseal or Resene StainLock and allowed to dry. Severe stains/marks may require an additional coat. You can then paint over these with water based topcoats, such as Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

October 2017

Q. I have a ply clad barn which has the paint flaking off down to bare wood. I don't know what products were used but I understand the ply was left bare for a couple of years before being painted, about six years ago. I will do the correct prep – waterblast, then sand to a clean finish. My question is, can I use Resene Lumbersider straight onto the bare ply or should I start with some sort of undercoat?

A. It is most likely that the timber has suffered from U.V degradation after being exposed to weathering, before painting. If you can see visible greying of the timber, this should be given a good sand to remove. Apply a coat of Resene TimberLock to the bare areas, followed by a coat of Resene Wood Primer on the same areas. Then you can apply two full coats of Resene Lumbersider. Please note that Resene TimberLock will not penetrate through existing coatings. Such areas will need wiping off.

October 2017

Q. We are looking into painting our Fire Station engine bay floors. I am just wondering what products you have, that would be suitable non slip paint, but could also withstand having 20 tonne trucks parked on top of it?

A. Yes, we have a few different options available for flooring of your Fire Station. The most suitable option is the following:
1 x coat of Resene Aquapoxy (thinned 15% with water)
1 x coat of Resene Aquapoxy (with Resene Industrial SRG Grit added at a rate of 500g/L)
1 x coat of Resene Aquapoxy with no added SRG added.

Resene Aquapoxy is available in both gloss and semi-gloss variants.

October 2017

Q. We have a garage, which has unpainted blockwork and we wish to paint it white. Can you please tell me what will be the best paint for concrete block? The outside blockwork has similarly never been painted. Do we need a different sort of paint for that? It won't be white - colour to be decided!

A. For the exterior we would recommend Resene X-200.

The requirement for application of a sealer will be determined by the age and condition of the blockwork.

For the interior, I suggest Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen applied over a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer.

October 2017

Q. Do you have a paint that can be used in swimming pools? I have a concrete pool that needs refurbishing.

A. Yes, Resene Swimming Pool Paint.

Q. I am repainting my bathroom after a new shower goes in. Is Resene Lustacryl okay to go over Resene Sureseal? I need to manage a problem of mouldy spots, which sometimes showed on the previous waterbased painted surfaces (in spite of fan and ventilation). Or should I use a solvent-based topcoat?

A. Treat all areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and follow with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. This system will give the best prevention of mould growth, but it requires the existing mould spores to be killed using Resene Moss & Mould Killer first. Both Resene Quick Dry and Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom contain mould inhibiting pigmentation. Solventborne topcoats will avoid the surfactant leaching issue, but not address ongoing mould growth. Pre-treatment with Resene Moss & Mould Killer will still be necessary before repainting and I would advise use of Resene Quick Dry as the undercoat.

October 2017

Q. I was told not to shower in a painted bathroom for a whole week after painting! Does it need to be a week rather than a couple of days for curing? I know about wiping down for a few showers afterwards.

A. The cure time without steam or water contact is to reduce the potential for surfactant leaching. The cure rate is determined by temperature and ventilation, the longer the better. As a general rule if the room is heated and a dehumidifier used, this is the best way to reduce the potential for surfactant leaching but again the longer the better.

October 2017

Q. I am looking for a coloured, waterbased polyurethane floor enamel paint. Does Resene have this product?

A. Resene Uracryl 802 is the closest Resene product to what you are describing.

October 2017

Q. I want to paint my new deck of treated pine timber in black. Can you recommend a paint, non-skid, and very weatherproof please?

A. The colour you have selected may well be a challenge, as the deck surfaces will get hot and this may result in resin being drawn from the decking timber. To reduce the potential for this to occur, the best system would be a coat of Resene Wood Primer and two coats of Resene Lumbersider CoolColour, with added Resene SRG Grit. The paint will not be cool to touch, but will reflect more heat than the same colour made in the non-cool version of the colour.

October 2017

Q. I want to repaint a west facing, exterior wall for maximum weatherproofing. It was painted with Resene Lumbersider some years ago. The wall is Fibrolite. There are no cracks.

I am considering Resene AquaShield or Resene X-200. Could you please give advice on suitability, the difference between these, or any other suggestions?

My builder brother suggested a good thick coat of paint, even with sand in it. The rest of the house is Adobe Finish plaster.

A. If there are no moisture issues and the existing paint is sound, you can apply two coats of Resene Sandtex to achieve a sand type of texture, scrub down the existing paint with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, and then apply the new paint.

October 2017

Q. I want to change the colour of the cork tiles on my dining room floor, to a greyish, white wash. Do you have a product that would do this please? The tiles are currently coated with varnish.

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, sand to de-gloss and then apply two coats of Resene Colorwood Greywash.

October 2017

Q. Can you successfully paint over borer holes (and not have them reappear)?

A. Borer holes are the exit point of the larvae once they mature. So if they are filled and then painted the filled holes should not re appear but often there remains larvae that do bore out in the same or adjacent areas.

October 2017

Q. We have built a new deck beside an old stained deck. The old deck is kwila stained and we want to paint both decks to match. How do we choose a colour to achieve this? I don’t know what the old stain is. I am really wondering how we match a new deck with this older, much darker deck. Is it better to paint all the same in a dark paint?

A. Painting both with a solid colour is the only way to achieve a uniform colour.

October 2017

Q. Our window sills are currently polyurethane over rimu woodwork. Can we topcoat over Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer without undercoating first?

A. Yes as long as the varnish is clean and free of oil/grease type of contaminants. Allow the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for 48 hours before overcoating.

October 2017

Q. I need to repaint the lead flashing between the upper level of my house and the concrete tiles of the roof. What do I need to use?

A. The lead flashings would need to be primed with Resene Galvo One before applying the waterborne topcoats.

October 2017

Q. What primer/undercoat and topcoat is best to use on MDF? It’s new and is in the kitchen as shelves.

A. We recommend Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

October 2017

Q. I want to paint some metal kitchen chairs metallic. What should I use?

A. Lightly sand the legs then apply a brush coat of Resene Armourcote 221 and then spray Resene Imperite IF 503 Metallic tinted to your chosen colour.

October 2017

Q. I am using a solventborne sealer in a bathroom but find it has quite an odour. Could I use a low odour Resene waterborne sealer?

A. We have many low odour waterborne sealers. However for bathrooms usually a solventborne sealer is recommended as this helps to hold back any staining that may occur. It can then be topcoated in a low odour waterborne finish. Resene Sureseal, Resene Super Gloss and Resene Lusta-Glo are all lower odour versions. In a bathroom because of the small space it’s best to have all windows open and a fan or similar to keep the air moving around.

While a bathroom could be painted in a waterborne sealer, generally the best longer term results are achieved with a solventborne sealer as a waterborne sealer cannot hold back water stains.

October 2017

Q. I have a vase that has a base that is a kind of rose gold/copper colour. I want to know if this colour can be recreated in a paint.

A. A Resene FX Metallic colour may suit – see the Resene Metallics and Special effects chart.

October 2017

Q. What paint should I use on my white wooden front door step? I have found house paint wears through quickly. Is there a harder wearing product?

A. Ensure the steps are clean then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

October 2017

Q. We’re designing a building to house tanks holding sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). The building is also situated within 500m of the coast.

Although the NaClO is contained within tanks there is some possibility (albeit unlikely) of spills during filling from tankers, and during maintenance procedures. We understand that NaClO is very corrosive to metals in general and particularly zinc.

Due to the building’s proximity to the coast we have specified that all steelwork (portal frames) be hot-dipped galvanized to at least 600 g/m². We do, however, have some concerns about the possible effect of NaClO fumes on the zinc galvanising and wonder whether your company can advise us on the best protection that can be applied to the steelwork, over the galvanising or instead of the galvanizing.

A. Bleach solutions are stabilised with addition of sodium hydroxide which raises the pH to a high level, it is the alkalinity combined with the oxidising feature of the active component that can cause reaction with galvanizing.

A high build epoxy such as Resene ArmourCote 510 will act as a barrier to prevent any reaction due to high solution pH, however epoxies are discoloured by contact with even low levels of hypochlorite. To avoid this we specify a two pack polyurethane topcoat such as Resene Uracryl 403.

We can arrange a Resene representative to prepare a full specification for you if required.

October 2017

Q. Just reading through the SDS for Wintergrade Lumbersider and it says that this may cause thermal and third degree burns? How likely is this? Why would we use this paint if it can burn?

A. Wintergrade Lumbersider is a waterborne paint which has a slightly alkaline pH and I cannot see any reason why the product will cause thermal or third degree burns upon skin contact. The SDS that you provided was an earlier version which has been superseded. However Resene Lumbersider would never have caused any burning upon skin contact. Legislation requiring certain SDS statements often has a warning that relates to a raw material safety for the concentrated raw material and does not distinguish the reality of the hazard associated with the raw material in a formulated product (i.e. the hazard may be hazardous when concentrated as a raw material but this is mitigated once mixed into the paint with other ingredients).

October 2017

Q. I want to paint over solid rimu doors and skirting boards approximately 20-25 years old. I think they are varnished with polyurethane? What type of paint do you recommend?

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating.

Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not formulated to be applied as a high build coating or to achieve opacity, only a thin coat is required. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

Flat doors can be rolled. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

October 2017

Q. I have almost finished a renovation and have run out of my low sheen waterborne Resene Zylone Sheen paint (bedroom walls). I have some Resene SpaceCote waterborne enamel in the same colour (used in kitchen and bathroom). Can I use this to finish the last bedroom, it will be enough, quantity wise, but will it be different when dry and cured?

A. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen can be used for painting any interior wall surfaces. However, you can't mix this paint with Resene Zylone Sheen, if mixing wet paints.

October 2017

Q. I have an old, non-painted, block wall. What can I clean it with, to remove dirt and mould? I also have a new block wall, which I need to seal and paint, what products should I use to do this? Also, I have a new deck to seal (not sure of the wood) - it has been down about two months. What products do I use (one to clean it; one to seal it with an oil)? The deck is made of Vitex.

A. For old blockwork, treat moss/mould/algae using Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions, then waterblast. When dry, apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal. Then apply three coats of Resene X-200. For new blockwork, the same system can be used.

In regards to the decking timber - like most hardwood decking timbers Vitex does not accept stains as well as timbers like pine. However a period of exposure to weathering, can open up the timber surface and given that the decking has been exposed to weathering for two months, I can see no issues with oiling or staining as long as the exposure was to full weathering.

October 2017

Q. A couple of friends (of maturish years) are building a car, and with mechanical issues all but completed, now wish to complete the ‘DIY’ theme personally - possibly by hand/brush painting. The car is an open, single seat rendition of a 1950s race car, and the body shell is constructed of a number of separate panels, variously of fibreglass, steel and aluminium.

Our interest is in identifying the most likely, suitable paint system - primer/undercoat and finishing - and discussion with paint retailers and car refinishers is getting us nowhere, as the whole idea seems to be beyond their experience or interest.

Our preference is for a 'strong' yellow colour, and the immediate question is, whether you are able to direct us towards the most appropriate system?

A. The collection of differing substrates is probably the reason why some may be struggling to help you. After degreasing and cleaning, apply at least two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 brushing epoxy, and then 2-3 coats of Resene Uracryl 403, tinted to the yellow you are seeking. However, we would not be able to match automotive colours.

For extra UV and wear protection, apply a coat of Resene Uracryl 403 UVS Clear, after the two coats of base colour.

October 2017

Q. I bought paint today for my lounge and hallway. When I got home and looked at it, I saw that they gave me Resene Lumbersider paint. Will this be ok? I assumed I would have been given Resene Zylone Sheen or something similar.

A. Resene Lumbersider originally, was used for both, exterior and interior painting, but it is now only usually used for the exterior. It can be used for interior wall painting, but not for wet rooms, such as bathrooms/laundries or kitchens. We have two interior paints, Resene Zylone Sheen and Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen; the latter is the only waterborne paint we recommend for wet areas.

October 2017

Q. I want to paint our change table, in our new Plunket rooms. It is made from wood. Someone recommended chalk finish paint? It is bare.

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then sand with 220 grit sandpaper. Dust down, and then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

October 2017

Q. Our house was completed four years ago. It has 109 sq m of Shadowclad. Resene Woodsman Iroko, penetrating oil stain was used. The colour has faded quite a lot and I suspect that workmanship may be the cause. I have recoated one elevation of 13.5 sq m using Resene Iroko bought last year. The colour is noticeably different from the product used by the original painters, even though it is the same code from the same shop. The elevation that I painted, took approximately 4 litres and I applied it by brush using horizontal and vertical strokes to ensure good coverage. We wish to continue to repaint the entire house and wonder if the product we have used is the correct product, or should we use a paint system. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

A. All wood stains, including Resene Woodsman, are considered high maintenance vs a paint.

The maintenance interval is determined by exposure conditions, the stain is designed to weather/erode from the surface and typically the northern elevation, has a greater erosion rate than other elevations.

Depending upon the underlying timber colour and remaining stain colour and the thickness of the new stain, there may well be colour differences between old and newly stained colours.

October 2017

Q. I am painting old varnished doors. I have used Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer on them; do I need to undercoat before applying the topcoat?

A. No, if applying a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat system. Allow the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for 48 hours before topcoating.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks, until full cure occurs. In the early stages, the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion, as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

October 2017

Q. I need to repair some painted steel surfaces that have some red rust, or corrosion coming through. The beams and trusses are mainly on the roof that is exposed to the elements, in a coastal environment. Ideally, part of the treatment would include returning the work to the same aesthetic colour.

A. The corrosion has occurred due to typical contact of steel/galvanised with concrete. In this situation, you can only install a paint system to accessible areas, and rust creep may continue from non-accessible areas.

Wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions , allow to dry then apply two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer, or Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer.

October 2017

Q. I am painting part of a ceiling in the hallway after a water leak, which is all fixed and plastered, sanded and sealed. However, the existing white is between a semi and flat finish, and is waterbased. It is about 8 years old. What paint do you have in-between a semi and flat finish?

A. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, which is a low sheen finish.

October 2017

Q. Our main work is for commercial food outlets. Is there any benefit in using oil-based enamel, in a high use commercial area on toilet doors? Or is waterbased as good?

A. Solventborne enamels are a harder dry film than a waterborne analogue. Given this, they would be more hardwearing than waterborne enamel for doors in a commercial situation.

October 2017

Q. What preparation and paint should I use to paint a glass shelf? Do I use primer and undercoat?

A. The best product is Resene Imperite IF 503 applied direct to clean glass.

October 2017

Q. I have some old paint that I haven’t used which is around six months old. Can it be returned?

A. We can accept untinted paint returns in the original container, up to three months old. Unopened paint in a can does age over time and will eventually either go off or start to thicken and eventually go hard. We try and aim to keep the stock in our stores well rotated so customers receive fresh stock. We tend to update our label information regularly and sometimes tweaks are made to formulations also.

October 2017

Q. Do you have neon paint or coloured paint that will glow in the dark, like you see at glow in the dark mini golf?

A. We do have Resene FX Fluoro paint which is a range of fluoro paints. If you use them with blacklit they glow and look more like neon. This is the sort of finish that glow in the dark mini golf courses use. The blacklight also makes white clothes look so bright. We also have a glow in the dark product – Resene FX Nightlight – however this only glows once all the lights have gone out and it is only available in one colour (tinting it affects the glow in the dark effect).

October 2017

Q. Do you have anything for faded aluminium windows?

A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions then apply Resene Clearcoat UVS.

October 2017

Q. I have some external wooden stairs, which are exposed to rain etc. The stairs were painted with a high gloss, black oil based paint. They are due a repaint and I was wondering what product you would recommend? I would like to retain the colour and finish if possible.

A. You could use the same paint type again (Resene Super Gloss), clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, sand, dust off and reapply two coats of the enamel topcoat.

I do have concerns re wet slip resistance, to address this after cleaning and sanding, apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry, then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on Black in the CoolColour™ version.

October 2017

Q. I have a new wooden fence and want to match it to our house, which has Thunder Grey roofing and trim. What is the best product to stain/paint fence easily with Thunder Grey?

A. If the fence is new then you can apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider, in your selected colour. We recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour if available; the CoolColour version reflects more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation, but is not cool to touch.

October 2017

Q. I need to stain a work bench with a black stain. It has been well coated with polyurethane (at least a couple of coats). Do I need to strip it right back or can I simply stain over?

A. Yes, as the stain coat needs to be applied to the timber.

October 2017

Q. Prior to repainting, can I wash my exterior stucco walls with Resene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner? I have a new container of it that I would like to use. Does the wash then need a rinse?

A. We recommend using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions for preparing painted stucco, and yes, it does require a thorough rinsing with water.

October 2017

Q. I have a new pine fence, which I want to paint to protect from the elements. I would like to retain the natural colour of the fence timber. What would you recommend to use please?

A. We do not have water white clear for exterior timber, for staining the closest we have to a clear would be Resene Woodsman Natural stain but this may well alter the colour of pine. Clear finishes don’t provide sufficient protection to timber.

October 2017

Q. I am using Resene Colorwood Whitewash over varnished pine. Can I add some acrylic white to give more depth?

A. We do not recommend adding more colourant to the product but you can apply additional coats of Resene Aquaclear with added Resene Colorwood Enhance White to increase white colour depth.

October 2017

Q. Some years ago, when I had moisture ingress/mould issues (now solved), a building consultant referred by BRANZ recommended painting the house exterior with Resene X-200. At the time, this product was aimed at the commercial market (it was available in a limited range of tints but only if you ordered at least 200 litres). Is it available in the colours Resene Sisal and Resene Triple Sisal?

A. Resene X-200 is not a waterproof coating but will render a substrate weathertight; a weathertight membrane allows moisture vapour to pass through the film (breathable) but not water, a water tight membrane allows neither.

Resene X-200 can now be tinted to a range of Resene colours and is available from any Resene ColorShop without the need to purchase a 200 litre factory batch. However there remains a limitation on the availability of bright colours from red, yellow and orange shades.

October 2017

Q. I have some dark stained beams and am wondering how I need to prime/seal these (so that the dark colour doesn't bleed through the paint) before painting in a whitish colour.

A. Our recommendation would be Resene Sureseal, if there is stain bleed after applying the Resene Sureseal apply an additional coat of Resene StainLock.

October 2017

Q. Is there a way to make the fluoro colours last longer outdoors?

A. Fade of fluoro colours is rapid in our conditions when fully exposed to UV. Application of a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS will give extension of colour fastness.

October 2017

Q. I want to paint over wallpaper. What paint should I get? Any tips?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer and then two coats of Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

October 2017

Q. I have purchased some flat pack furniture and it is giving off some rather strong odours (formaldehyde possibly) and was wondering whether Resene offers a suitable low odour/VOC sealer that could help. I was thinking to use a clear sealer to seal the exposed partible board edges. The closest item I could find was the Resene Aquaclear.

A. You could use at least three coats of clear Resene Polythane. Single coats and waterborne clears do not cross link to hold back formaldehyde emissions.

October 2017

Q. What can I use to prime stainless steel flashings (with galvanised nails) and what should I paint over it (so it all sticks, of course)?

A. We recommend Resene Galvo One applied to degreased metal.
