Turn the tables

Mark Rayner transforms a kitset table ideal for backyard or beach gardens (it's very wind resistant) using Resene Timber and Furniture Gel.

You will need: A kitset barbecue table, including bolts and screws needed for assembly, screwdriver, adjustable spanner, small paintbrush, clean lint-free cloth, latex gloves and sandpaper. Resene Timber and Furniture Gel in Resene Silvered Grey.

Top tip: If you’re using this product on an old, weathered table, the wood should first be treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and then cleaned with Resene Timber and Deck Wash.

Step 1
Following manufacturer’s instructions, place the tabletop face down on flat ground and fix the leg sections into position, bolting through the underside brackets, as shown.

Fix the diagonal support braces to the legs, screwing into position through the pilot holes provided.

Turn the table the right way up and screw through the pilot holes in the table top, fixing the support braces to the underside of the table top.

Position seats on to seat supports and fasten with screws.

Lightly smooth off any rough edges with sandpaper.

Using a small paintbrush, carefully apply the Resene Timber and Furniture Gel between the slats on the table top and seats.

Turn table upside down. Apply the Resene Timber and Furniture Gel to the underside of its top and seats with a clean lint-free cloth. Lightly rub the gel along the timber grain using medium pressure to help penetration.

Turn the table the right way up and apply the Resene Timber and Furniture Gel to the rest of it. Leave to dry for an hour. Apply a second coat of gel to the entire table. Allow this to dry well before using the table.
