The grey panel is a standard coating. The black panel is coated in Resene CoolColour technology. The black Resene CoolColour panel has the same infra-red (heat) absorption as the standard paint finish on the grey panel.

Dark colours on areas such as roofing are suntraps soaking in the sun's rays placing significant relentless stress on the coating and the substrate. All dark colours absorb a lot of light. This in isolation is not an issue however in combination with the light absorption dark colours also absorb heat from the infra red rays of the sun causing significant temperature build up on the surface. White and light coloured paints reflect both light and heat and therefore are not affected. The unique formulation and materials of the Resene CoolColour range allows them to absorb light so they look the same but simultaneously reflect a large proportion of the heat falling on them keeping the surfaces significantly cooler than their standard counterparts. In essence, the colours work by reflecting energy in the near and far infra red region of the spectrum even though they absorb strongly in the visible region. The end result being that a Resene CoolColour will look the same as a standard colour but surface heat will build up slower and to a significantly lower level than a 'not so cool' traditional colour.
In hot summer conditions a Resene CoolColour will help keep the coating, substrate and surface cooler, which can help to minimise heat transference inside. A secondary benefit is that the reduced stress on the coating and substrate will help to increase the expected lifetime of each compared to a standard version of the same colour.

Resene CoolColour technology performs optimally on dark colours that are the most prone to heat build-up, which makes it ideally suited for dark roofing and wall colours. Resene CoolColour technology doesn't promise to resolve all issues related to heat, but will help to reduce the impact of dark colour selection. A change in tone or product may be required for some colours to achieve a Resene CoolColour effect. CoolColour and standard variants of a specific colour use different pigment combinations by necessity to achieve a match to the same Resene master colour standard. This can cause slight colour differences depending on the degree and type of light, which naturally varies with the time of day.
