Resene Total Colour Awards 2018 winners

Bold hues wins Freemans Bay School the top colour award in the Resene Total Colour Awards 2018 with colours that bring the school into the heart of the community

Freemans Bay School, re-designed and renewed by RTA Studio led by architect Moshin Mussa, is the overall winner of the Nightingale Award at the 2018 Resene Total Colour Awards.

The RTA Studio team have chosen groupings of colour to reference Maori culture and the school's proud multi-cultural heritage. Moshin Mussa says: “The cladding panels are painted in rich and vibrant colours to encompass the school's diverse cultural community and the children's different ethnic backgrounds.”

He says blue Resene paint colours are used on the Whanau Ata Library to express the sea. Greens are used for the admin building to reference the forest. An orange palette is used for the Learning House for sunrise and reds are used for the School Hall to reference the earth.

The site contained existing 1960s school buildings, playing fields, and car parking. To make way for the new development, all existing buildings apart from one were removed.

Mussa says: "Colour is a relatively cost-effective way to bring a project to life. We used colour to characterise the school's identity and also to enhance the architecture. Resene paint colours were selected as they best represented our conceptual design ideas. They proved to be exactly what the school was after and we've had numerous comments from visitors and from community members on how striking the colours are."

Nick Nightingale of Resene says: "The vibrant use of colour in the architecture of New Zealand schools is among the most exciting we see at Resene, and RTA Studio's Freemans Bay School is no exception. Even the paint names chosen for the project have aligned with the project's design sentiment. Resene Discover and Resene Energise point to the learning taking place in these spaces. And Resene Kakapo and Resene Pohutukawa point to some of the themes. We congratulate RTA Studio and the Ministry of Education for their masterful way of using colour to tell the Freemans Bay School story."

Resene has a long history of colour and today's colour range of thousands of hues is a far cry from the handful that was available when Resene started 72 years ago. The Resene Total Colour Awards were launched to encourage and celebrate excellent and creative use of colour; to showcase striking colour palettes and combinations and provide fresh inspiration.

Awards have been given for the best colour use in: Residential Exterior, Residential Interior, Colourful Room, Commercial Exterior, Commercial Interior Office, Commercial Interior Public + Retail Space, Installation - Experiential - Product, Education, Neutrals, Rising Star and Lifetime Achievement, with the Colour Master Nightingale Award for the best overall colour use.

“Beautiful colour meets interesting form. Unapologetically declaring its identity, the colour is brought to the street and to the community, announcing its presence. Te Horo Bach by Gerald Parsonson and Zac Vermuelen of Parsonson Architects.

“Subtle and softly retro, the washed out beachy tones gently settle this home into its environment. Yet this home is more colourful than first meets the eye. Working within covenants, the colour reads front on within the covenant requirements, but viewed side on, more colour emerges. It's an inspiring use of colour where most would settle for neutrals.”

This project uses a colour palette of Resene Canvas, Resene Half Delta, Resene Classius, Resene Ecru White, Resene Tussock and Resene Boulevard.

Gerald Parsonson

Gerald Parsonson

“Looking through the work of Gerald Parsonson, there is a rhythm of colours that runs through his projects – sometimes it is brighter and bolder, sometimes it meanders softly. Each project has its own colour rhythm, no two are alike. Each palette is carefully curated for each owner, their lifestyle and the way they want to use their space. It's a reminder for all of us that colour can reflect who we are and how we want to live our lives and that we should never be afraid to choose to live with the colours we love.

We've had the privilege of seeing many colourful projects from Gerald and we look forward to seeing many colourful more.”
