How did ColorShops get their name?

We're often asked how ColorShops got their name. The name ColorShop has quite a long history and has been used since 1970s, when the first ColorShop was opened in Wellington. Tony Nightingale, the son of Ted who started Resene and the father of Nick who currently runs Resene had to come up with a name for our stores. He considered calling them a ColourShop or a ColorShop and decided on 'ColorShop' rather than 'ColourShop' because it looked better (more evenly balanced without the 'u') and would be unique. It also has a capital 'S' in the middle which also doesn't fit with normal spelling, but this was also done by Tony to make it more unique. We spell 'colour' correctly for all our normal colour charts and articles. Over the years many others had tried to imitate Tony's new developments so he always tried to do things a little differently. Tony is a huge part of the history of Resene taking it from a very small business to a nationwide business and then one that started selling overseas. Tony's spelling of the name 'ColorShop' has been retained in his memory.

Resene ColorShops are Consumer Trusted

Resene ColorShops have achieved 'Consumer Trusted' accreditation, one of a very small number of retailers to have this accreditation. Consumer NZ has reviewed Resene ColorShops and the way we serve our customers covering everything from pricing to training, complaints to warranties, to ensure it meets their stringent standards. What this means is that Resene ColorShops go above and beyond most retail stores to ensure customers enjoy excellent service. Our Resene ColorShops are staffed by knowledgeable trained and friendly staff who can give advice on anything from product and colour choice through to application and clean up after the decorating is done.

To become Consumer Trusted, a business must meet Consumer NZ's strict code of conduct that focuses largely on consumer law such as the Fair Trading Act and Consumer Guarantees Act. A business must show it exceeds the minimum requirements of the law.

The Consumer Trusted programme has been running since 2014 and encourages businesses to deliver exceptional customer service. Resene was one of the first companies to be approved as part of the programme and has continued to be Consumer Trusted since 2014.

Resene ColorShops worked with Consumer NZ across a range of areas to ensure it met Consumer NZ's Trusted standards. As part of this work, Resene ColorShops introduced the sale promise, so Resene cardholders buying within one week of the start of a sale can come back into a Resene owned ColorShop during the sale with their receipt and enjoy the benefit of the sale offer discounts, even though they shopped before the sale starts. By using Consumer Trusted businesses, New Zealand consumers can be confident they are dealing with market leaders that put the customer first. Consumer Trusted businesses are required to deliver over and above consumer law.

Soft plastic recycling

Selected Resene ColorShops have soft plastic recycling collection areas in store – these are Wairau Park Resene ColorShop, Tauranga Resene ColorShop, Thorndon Resene ColorShop and Ferrymead Resene ColorShop. Other Resene ColorShops can accept Resene magazine soft plastic wrap and arrange recycling through the soft plastics recycling location.
