Make the most of the new year with home renovations

It's always worthwhile to think about ways you can spruce up your home, and now may be the perfect time for some home renovations.

If you have a free weekend coming up, consider setting some time aside to work on a few of the following projects.

Wallpaper

If you've ever dreamed of having really bold walls or a feature wall in a particular room, there's never been a better time to go for it. There are so many wallpaper options on the market, including textured, metallic and patterned options.

If you want to be ahead of the fashion pack, take a look at the Resene Glamour 2014 range. It's got fresh colours, prints and styles to transform your home in time for the new year.

Furnishings

If you're thinking about smaller-scale renovations, updating simple furnishings can be a great place to start. Cushions, throw blankets, candlesticks, photo frames and artwork can all be swapped out for new pieces and can completely change the theme of your room.

This is also a great place to use bright colours and bold prints, without overwhelming a space by applying them on larger surfaces.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of many homes, so it makes sense to give it a once-over every now and then. One way to update this space is by installing open shelving, as opposed to hiding all your crockery and appliances behind cupboards. This is a great way to show off your collection of quirky glassware and plates. Consider painting it a contrasting colour or finishing it with wallpaper to help draw attention to this space.

You may also want to update your sink's backsplash for another small but effective way to change the dynamic of your room. This is a great place to use bold colour or creative textures, as it doesn't take up much space.
