Background to mural creation:
This mural is a representation of the Maramataka moon phases, including the Oturu Moon and the nine stars of Matariki.
Maramataka is rooted in knowledge around tohu in the sea, land and the sky. The movement of tides, stars, fish, animals, birds, wind, plants and all the different parts of the taiao (environment) are connected. The mural reflects Oturutanga, the school’s values – Ako, Manaakitanga, Kaitiakitanga, Whanaugatanga and Rangatiratanga along with the connection of the classroom names which represent the water cycle which are influenced by the moon.
