Mural theme:
The themes of the Cannon Creek suburb – from its beginnings as a NZ bush valley, which supported a sawmill owned by William Cannon in the 19th century to a modern day suburb with a large percentage of Polynesian ethnic groups and a community with a certain sympathy for modern street art.

Background to mural creation:
Cannons Creek as a suburb has been the traditional port of call for news media when they want shots of a rundown community. Those days are numbered as artwork on the Cannon Creek shops is helping to create a vibrant feel to the shops. With this work – believed to be the only collaboration between a Trompe l’oeil artist – Marc Spijkerbosch – and a graph artist – Anthony June – in New Zealand and possibly further afield – it has lifted the artwork to that of a public art gallery. This was the goal of this Porirua City Council project: to create something very special that locals could feel very proud of and not tire of looking at as they sit in the sun in the square in front of the mural.
