Background to mural creation:
At Chanel College in Term 4, the class teacher Miss Woodward held an extension art group for visual arts, one session each week. The group decided to enter the Resene competition because they thought it would be an exciting way to brighten up the year 7-8 social area. As a group they talked about various topics for the mural, looked at previous examples on the Resene website and eventually came up with the idea of drawing pictures to represent the different cultures of both pupils and staff at Chanel College. They chose this topic because it could be ongoing. Whenever new pupils or teachers from other countries start at Chanel, their countries could be added to the mural.
They started by making a list of the countries that Chanel children come from and looked for pictures on Google and Click Art. Luke from year 12 drew the mural outlines to scale on the wall. Angela, one of the Chanel student's parents, helped draw the pictures on the wall.
The art group worked together as a team to paint the wall. Other year 7 and 8 students also helped as there was so much to do in a short time.
The mural is a combination of painting and mosaic patterns made with tiles. |
