Background to mural creation:

These three pieces have been created to represent Tongan heritage. Parawai School was having elective sessions and Alby Tukia was lucky enough to be asked to share the Tongan culture, traditions and art with a small group. The passion from those students towards these pieces was amazing to see.

The murals represent:

• Tupuanga – beginning (created previously in black and white in an electives programme)
• Fanau – young people – young people who have been to school before us and those that are coming in the future.  The bright colours embrace the innocence of being a child.
• Fononga – the journey – these students need to remember where they have come from and where they are going, enjoying the moments along the way. This was painted black and yellow for the school colours with the red representing the beating heart of Tonga.  Each turtle has the young artist’s name on it. They are ready to explore the big wide ‘ocean’ out there.
• Kaha’u – the future – this piece combines all three prior and is definite showpiece reminding everyone at Parawai School to enjoy the moment, remember their roots and to flourish into the future.
