Mural Masterpieces - Flaxbourne Settlers/Flaxbourne Museum Flaxbourne Museum

Location:
Flaxbourne Settlers/Flaxbourne Museum, State Highway One, Flaxbourne.

Team:
Sally Peter, Jack Taylor and Mary Hickman.

Accessible to public:
Yes.

Mural theme:
Historic mural scene of plough horses adapted from 1903 screen print and showing local features.

Background to mural creation:
The mural was created to enhance the museum building and promote it to passing traffic and tourist buses stopping at the tearooms opposite. It tells the story that Flaxbourne Station was the first sheep station in the South Island, founded by Clifford & Weld in 1846. The plough horses build the image of breaking in the land for settlement. The mural also helps to make Ward a memorable place and somewhere for people to remember.
