From Habitat plus - decorating and colour trends 2020
Whether you love it or hate it, pink has been, and continues to be, one of the most defining colours of the decade.
In fact, there hasn’t been any other colour that has become quite as sensational or made as much of an impact on decorating trends. While one particular ‘millennial’ shade may have kicked off pink’s popularity, the hue has since transitioned into a much dustier territory, becoming more refined and ‘grown up’ in the process.
Softer, rosier shades and muted near-beige blushes are being favoured now, as are those with a ruddier feel to them. The good news is that, unlike millennial pink, these versions don’t carry the same ‘flavour of the month’ vibe – meaning schemes built with today’s pinks are likely to have a much longer shelf life and result in a look with more timeless appeal.
As a result of pink’s soaring popularity, reds, browns and beiges have all been affected, with each taking on more of a pinky hue. This could be attributed in part to the continued prevalence of the tone-on-tone trend, where these desert-like shades often get combined and layered to create something of a sunset effect. To get the look, try combining Resene Just Dance, Resene Sunbaked, Resene Sorbet, Resene Soulful and Resene Despacito.
Make your own trendy abstract collage to carry a colour palette into your space. This one was created with little more than a few Resene testpots and adds a level of interest that makes the space really shine. Two coats of Resene Cleopatra, Resene Smoulder, Resene Love Me Do, Resene BFF and Resene Soulful were painted onto sections of heavy white cardstock and allowed to dry fully before being doodled on with a series of black polka dots and squiggles using a permanent marker. Wavy, freeform shapes were then cut out at random and glued on to a stiff cardboard background, where a grid pattern had been drawn on with a fine-lined black pen. The effect is one of a kind, yet it’s entirely easy to replicate yourself.
The pink trend has also diverged into another emerging trend: lilac. Restful and calming in nature, this romantic hue is an ideal choice for a bedroom. Lilac pairs well with both cool and warm whites, and if you look to nature, you’ll see how lovely it can look with greens and greys.
