Surf’s up in this vintage-inspired bedroom that shows you can work wonders with a splash of paint
Get that summer feeling all year round with this seaside-inspired bedroom. Gelato-coloured furnishings stand out against the neutral walls and evoke the fun and colour of summer for any beach-loving kid.
Not only does this room have a relaxed vibe, it has been created on a budget. If you are looking to make some changes in your child’s room and don’t want to spend the earth, search on Trade Me or in your local charity shops for some secondhand finds. We scored the headboards, bookshelf and bedside cabinet all for $80.
A new coat of pastel paint from Resene freshened up the slightly shabby cane furniture and drawers and, as a bonus, highlighted the textures in the headboard and bedside cabinet. Before you start painting, make sure you give any cane pieces a good wipe down and remove any dust, dirt or damaged pieces. We also bought a new lightshade and painted it in soft yellow Resene Splash to tie in with the room’s ice-cream palette.
Walls painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Island Spice. Floor painted in Resene Walk-on Island Spice. Bookshelf painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Keppel. Cabinet painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Wax Flower. Lightshade painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Splash. Baskets painted in Resene Scandal, Resene Splash and Resene Wax Flower.
Storage is essential in every child’s room. This large cane bookshelf with glass shelves is great for displaying books and accessories while also accommodating baskets for storing smaller bits and pieces. Simply paint some inexpensive baskets in coordinating hues to keep the room cohesive. Adding a touch of greenery, whether real of fake, always makes a space come alive, and a child’s room is no different. We chose two potted plants – one with large, lush leaves, the other with frond-like foliage – to reinforce the room’s beachy, tropical feel.
“You can use beach-themed art prints on the wall, or frame a few favourite summer snaps to make this scheme more personal ...”
