Habitat bright ideas with Fleur Thorpe – DIY projects
Brighten up your walls by making your own art in your favourite hues. Adjust the sizing to suit your wall space.
The DIY geometric wall art painted in Resene White, Resene Quarter Delta, Resene All Black, Resene Scrumptious, Resene Hullabaloo and Resene Gold Dust is stunning on a wall in Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay. The trim is in Resene Half Rice Cake
How to make DIY geometric wooden wall art:
Step 1
Start by painting the front face of the board with one coat of Resene Quick Dry. Once the primer is dry, give it a quick sand with a fine grit sandpaper. Wipe the dust away with a soft cloth. Use a ruler and pencil to draw on your pattern/shape.
Step 2
Use a jig saw or band saw to cut your shape out. Sand any rough edges smooth, then prime the cut edges with Resene Quick Dry, followed by a quick sand once the primer is dry. Wipe away the dust.
Step 3
For the middle part of the pattern, Fleur used Resene White and Resene Quarter Delta. She used painter’s masking tape to separate the two colours. This meant she could get a nice crisp line when she applied Resene Quarter Delta second. Apply two coats, then remove the tape as soon as you finish the second coat (while the paint is still wet).
Step 4
Next paint the small triangles in Resene All Black, again using tape to get a crisp line.
Step 5
Finish by painting the last remaining triangles in Resene Scrumptious, Resene Hullabaloo and Resene Gold Dust, again using painter’s masking tape to get a clean edge. Once dry, attach a hanging mechanism to the back – either a store-brought hanger, or you could add two short screws and tie some string between them.

Top tip: For a matte look piece of art, paint the finished piece in Resene Concrete Clear Flat. Or for higher gloss highlights, use Resene Concrete Clear Gloss on selected accent colours. This will help accentuate their colour making them look brighter.
