Designed to reflect the rustic charm of this small beachside community, the new Matakana Cinema Complex is painted in a range of Resene colours and textures.

With its wineries, art galleries, cafés and sandy beaches, Matakana has long been a favourite haunt for holidaymakers. Now the north Auckland township has another attraction to add to its list – the new Matakana Cinema Complex, designed by Noel Lane Architects.

Matakana Cinema Complex exterior

The new Matakana Cinema Complex acknowledges the architectural vernacular of the rural, beachside community. The exterior features a mix of exposed timber cladding and weatherboards painted in Resene Lumbersider – an Environmental Choice-approved paint made from a tough acrylic resin that ensures maximum durability in all conditions.

Not surprisingly, the complex echoes the laid-back rustic charm of the small community, with its mix of old-style baches, rural buildings and modern beach houses. The cinema features a combination of exposed timber siding and painted weatherboards – its alternating forms reminiscent of the surrounding architecture.

To enhance the link with the natural environment, the exterior is predominantly finished in Resene Lumbersider, in hues of Resene Linen, a green-edged neutral, Resene Raptor, a murky green, and Resene Cargo, a light olive.

Orange bathroom

Resene paints also feature on the interior, and include Resene Stark White in the ice-cream shop, and the bright-orange Resene Carpe Diem in the women's bathroom. This has been painted over a spray coating of Resene Sandtex, which provides a finely textured surface.

The ice-cream shop, with its barrel-shaped roof, is finished in Resene Lumbersider in Resene Stark White from the Karen Walker Collection.

A sense of the dramatic is more evident in the bathrooms, which are finished in funky, bright colours, painted on a textured Resene Sandtex surface. In the women's bathroom, shown here, Resene Carpe Diem, a bright sunshine orange, is painted over Resene Sandtex. The ceiling features Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Gravel.

Resene Sandtex is a tough, waterborne, textured spray finish, frequently used to beautify and protect concrete structures. At just 150 microns thick, it can be used to re-create the texture of natural sandstone, or to create lightly textured effects. It will also disguise surface imperfections.
