At home in Arrowtown

The discovery of gold in the Arrow River in 1862 saw the birth of a new town, originally known as Fox's or Fox's Rush, and later renamed as Arrowtown. The original discovery of gold was kept a secret for a number of weeks, allowing the original discoverers to make a small fortune before thousands of miners rushed in to stake their claim. Barely six months after the discovery of gold, 1500 miners were working one of the richest sources of alluvial gold in the world. At the peak of the gold rush frenzy Arrowtown boasted 7000 residents and a host of businesses, the facades of which can still be seen today, sprung up to satisfy all needs.

As the gold rush died down in the early 1900s farming became a popular occupation and was joined in the later part of the century by tourism related businesses. Today the town is home to approximately 2200 residents. To retain the heritage of the town, strict town planning and historic protection orders are in place to protect the originality of the buildings and ensure that all new buildings are constructed in a sympathetic manner to the existing heritage buildings.

Arrowtown is renowned for its visual change of seasons, most notably the beautiful gold hues of autumn leaves, often reproduced in tourist-targeted literature. A town of extremes, winter brings blankets of snow while summer brings scorching hot days with temperatures in the high 30s (°C).

To celebrate this special part of New Zealand, Resene have developed an Arrowtown inspired colour scheme that you can use in your own home to bring a little of colonial New Zealand and folklore to your own backyard.
