1. Night sky lanterns

  • Paintbrush
  • Sponges
  • Leather thonging
  • Toothbrush

Make night sky lanterns

Instructions:

Paint your tins with two coats of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. When dry, draw a star design onto each. Carefully drill through each point of your star. Paint each tin with two coats of Resene Midnight Express, then a rough coat of Resene Lucky Point. Pick pieces off the sponge to add texture, dip it into Resene Deep Koamaru and pat over the tins. Repeat with gradual lighter colours. I have used Resene Governor Bay, then Resene Tory Blue and finally Resene Havelock Blue. For the pink I have used Resene Scrumptious, Resene Hopskotch, Resene Cupid and Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta. Flick a toothbrush with Resene Silver Aluminium and Resene Gold to splash stars over the tins. Thread and knot leather thonging to create a handle. Finally, place tea lights inside the tins and watch the Matariki night sky come to life.

2. Paper matariki stars

What you'll need:

  • Resene testpots
  • 7 paper bags
  • Scissors
  • Sponges
  • String
  • Double sided tape
  • Hole punch
  • Paintbrush

Make paper matariki stars

Instructions:

Cut the bottom off 7 paper bags, cut both top corners off each rectangle to create a house shape. Decorate the back, front and both sides of the bags with Resene paints. I have used Resene Midnight Express, Resene Governor Bay, Resene Tory Blue, Resene Havelock Blue, Resene Scrumptious, Resene Hopskotch, Resene Cupid, Resene Silver Aluminium and Resene Gold. Once dry, stick a 3cm piece of double sided tape to both bottom corners of each house and stick them all together in a stack. Make a hole through the bottom centre and knot string through it. Open out the stack and stick the first house to the last, creating the star. Hang up at home with string.

3. Glowing star art

  • Resene testpots
  • Resene FX Nightlight
  • Cotton fabric

  • Sponges
  • Paintbrush

  • Scissors

Make glowing star art

Instructions:

Trace each embroidery circle onto the fabric and paint each circle with Resene Midnight Express, then a rough coat of Resene Lucky Point. Pick pieces off the sponge to add texture, dip it into Resene Deep Koamaru and pat over the fabric. Repeat with gradual lighter colours. I have used Resene Governor Bay, then Resene Tory Blue and Resene Havelock Blue. For the pink I have used Resene Scrumptious, Resene Hopskotch, Resene Cupid and Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta. Flick a toothbrush with Resene Silver Aluminium and Resene Gold to splash stars on top. Paint dots in Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta. Once the dots are dry, paint each dot with Resene FX Nightlight glow in the dark paint. Finally, cut out each circle 2cm larger than your ring and lock into place.
