Upcycle an old cupboard door into a handy table with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 54

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, 50mm x 50mm timber (approx 4.2m), 65mm screws, drill with 3mm drill bit, large clamp, old panelled cupboard door (ours measured 520mm x 780mm), paintbrush, pencil, putty knife or similar, Resene EzyFill Quick, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Just Dance, Resene Quick Dry, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver, tape measure.

To get the look: Mark painted the background woodwork with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: For a vivid green effect, paint the table with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Wellywood.

Step one
From the 50mm x 50mm timber, cut four lengths measuring 420mm, two mitred lengths measuring 760mm (along the longest side) and two mitred lengths measuring 500mm (along the longest side). Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step two
Assemble the mitred pieces together to form a rectangular frame, as shown. Fix at each corner with 65mm screws, drilling pilot holes first. For a neat finish, countersink the screw heads.

Step three
Sand the cupboard door to remove any loose paint and also to ‘key’ the surface. Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step four
Attach the rectangular frame to the cupboard door, fixing with 65mm screws. Again, drill pilot holes first and countersink the screw heads.

Step five
Clamp each of the 420mm lengths of wood in position, as shown, to form the legs. Once again, fix with 65mm screws, drilling pilot holes first and countersinking the screw heads.

Step six
Fill the countersunk screw heads and any other holes or imperfections using Resene EzyFill Quick. Allow to dry and then sand smooth, wiping off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
