Verdigris candle holder

Create this fabulous faux verdigris effect using a combination of Resene colours.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Candle, Glass pebbles, Old terracotta candle holder (ours was purchased secondhand), Paintbrushes, Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene Testpots in the following colours: Resene Mischa, Resene Padua and Resene Voltage, Resene Multishield+ flat (now Resene Concrete Clear)

Top tip: Mark painted the garden table with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Chelsea Cucumber.

Other ideas: For a rich rusty effect, lightly brush Resene Dark Rum and Resene Rope over a basecoat of Resene Copperhead.

How to make a verdigris effect on a candle holder

Step one
Thoroughly wash the terracotta candle holder in warm soapy water, using an old paintbrush or scrubbing brush to remove any stubborn dust or dirt. Allow to dry.

Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Terracotta Sealer to the candle holder and allow to dry.

Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Mischka to the candle holder and allow two hours to dry.

Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Voltage to the candle holder and allow two hours to dry.

Step five
Apply a second coat of Resene Voltage to the candle holder and allow to dry.

Step six
Using a dry brush apply one light coat of Resene Padua to the candle holder, dabbing and brushing the paint on thinly to allow the base colour to show through. Allow two hours to dry.
